Glory of the Seas by Rwiederrich - Medium clipper 1869 (discontinued in lieu of new log)

Very nice work on the masting and rigging. That side view is impressive. Even at this scale the model must be close to 3 feet long. Beautiful.

Thanks Russ and everyone who posted likes.  I'll snug up the fore stays and then begin the foremast backstays.  This particular rigging process seams to take the longest.  I always pair them up.

If nobody noticed earlier..I also added several new boats on the  fore poop deck and also added a boat skid brace.  I was contemplating these additions for some time..since the Glory had experienced several additions and changes through her life..and some of them overlapped.  so it was a matter of what changed needed to be made for the time period I was modeling her.  Several years after the time frame I am representing, she had a small *Boys* house added between the aft hatch and the aft capstan..where the boats ended up...upright with canvas covers.

Thanks everyone..for the likes and fine comments.

I've been away from the Glory for a bit..working on other projects..but I hope to return very soon and finish up the foremast backstays.  I have nearly half of the yards rigging completed...so I hope to be jumping into that in the near future as well.

 

For fathers day I enjoyed a great day at the Sailing days wooden boat gala in Tacoma.  The Lady Washington was there, the brig they used in the Pirates of the Caribbean.

Have you finished anymore of the Glory? I’ve seen a number of models of her over the years as well as an extensive collection of photos and archives. You might reach out to Michael Mjelde if  you haven’t  already to answer any questions, etc.

Welcome.  I was working on her when I purchased the plans for Donald McKay's Great Republic(Which, themselves required a great many corrections)....  I was so enamored with her and her history, I set the Glory aside, taking a rest and began the
GR.  Currently I am nearing her completion and as soon as I place her in her case.....I will return to working on the Glory of the Seas.  I think I stopped also, because when I first began her I accepted some errors in her hull and minor errors in her finer structures....as I continued with her(and as my knowledge of her structures increased), I found myself more perplexed with them.

 

Again...on the other hand, some structure errors are minimalistic and do not detract from the overall image.  As you have previously pointed out.....she underwent many significant modifications, and replicating her during any one of them will still render an accurate model.

 

Thank you for your interest and tell your father his writings concerning her are some of my favorite and I look forward to our conversations.

It has been over 5 years since I began the Glory of the Seas...taking a departure to build my scratch Great Republic.  Now that I completed her, I am returning to the Glory after recently speaking to the author of the book *Glory of the Seas* Michael J. Mjelde....I've found new energy and purpose to finish her.

 

Here is were she resided while I worked on the GR..now she can come down and begin her own transformation and completion.

 

I hope everyone will fine her as enjoyable as they did the Great Republic.  I will only be rigging her as she was last photographed while under sail with only her lower and topsail set along with her main staysail and forestay sails.

Being a PNW guy, I really appreciate any of the areas sailing age historical builds.  We really have a rich sailing history which is rarely investigated as you can see by my wish list of builds in my signature line.

Thanks again Pat.   I have loads to do on the rigging and some other issues to attend to as far as what date I have chosen to model her in.  I've opted to keep her around the 1877 time frame...since she was heavily modified and updated throughout her colorful career.

 

I hope to rig her with weather sails similar to this image of her...the only known image of her under sails.

 

She will not be running fully sailed like the Great Republic...but her set will be surely different then what I've depicted in the past.

I worked on some mock-ups for the furled sails for the Glory of the Seas....

I then began making the first main course furled sail.  Finished making the yard and adding the foot ropes and flemishhorses.

Now the sails addition...I still have the bunt and clew blocks to add and the gin blocks.

Panel lines have been added prior to the sail being bent.  Still need to add the sheet blocks too.

 

Here is also an image of her with very battered sails...the only pic of her under sail and the way I will model her.

Worked a bit on the main yard and furled course.  Added blocks and jin blocks to rig the sail.

Then I mounted it to the mast...had to make the truck band for the mast as well...rigging up the bunt line blocks.

 

This will happen for each furled sail...so I have a long way to go.

Thanks Pat.  I decided to clew the sails up to the yards...instead of clewing them up to quarters.   The former was cleaner and probably the prefered rig for the Glory since she was launched after the 1860's  I'll bend the lower topsail probably next....which will be set.    It took me most of the building day to fabricate this one yard/sail.
