Are you rigging in your dreams by now as well? Looking very nice so far, Rob.

Sure feels like it...

I spent much of the lock-up building a 100ft fence and adding a 12x14 deck.  So I've been divided for sure.  but any time I do fine free I dedicate to sail ideas and work.

  • 2 weeks later...

Rob

Your GR build log is great and I go there often to find answers for a lot of my questions. I look forward to more of the same here.

I also began the sail construction for the lower topsail.  Lots to still add before it gets bent to the yard...not to mention all the blocks that still need to be added to the yard.

Yep Pat...all is well   Spent some time adding some new air handpieces to my tool kit.  A slow speed straight and angle drive handpiece  and an agled high speed handpiece   Makes getting holed drilled at angles in tight place far easier.

Sounds like a useful tool Rob - any photos details most welcome please.  I use a dental micro-motor with a straight and a contra angle handpiece but find the range of tools (2.35mm shank) a little limiting.

cheers

Here is the slow speed that has detachable straight and angle heads.

Love this handpiece.

You need a air control peddle to operate them.....

Thanks Rob,  much appreciate the photos.  I only have the slow speed micro-motor version; the air driven looks very interesting.

I have found jewellery suppliers have 2.35 shank drill bits and some burs (but there is not a great range) so I still have to rely on the Dremel for some tasks.  I have found some great 'separating disks (carbon fibre) which are very expensive, but very good - You have to remain very alert when using them as one small slip and kiss your digit good bye - they cut through soft-metals easy!  You get different types to cut different media, ceramic, steel etc .   I just cannot find a wide range of bits etc for the contra-angle head.  There seems to be plenty of burrs and cylinder style cutting bits (like micro-mill cutters) but nothing in the way of drill bits.  The following is the style of separating disc I mean - I have a different brand; these are just to show the type.

Separating Disc KOMET 0.5x22mm Fibre Reinforced Medium x 10

I find that the dental micro-motors are much better for small jobs; any serious torque need well....  for small jobs though they are so much easier to control and get into tight places.

cheers

Keith.....  I had them when I owned my Denture/dental lab....just now installing them.  I can order a plethora of  cutting bits and diamond bits for them.

Not your average tools....since you need a license to order from the dental supply house.

Yes Pat...dental tools do not use the same diameter bits as Dremel does.....making finding them a tough gig.   I use micro tapered dental pulp chamber reamers as a drill for my slow speed handpiece.  I just stop drilling at the right depth to achieve the right diameter hole I need.   I also made a Dremel chuck that fits into my Dental tools that holds all sizes of drills.  it's a bit long but for regular pre-assembly drilling, it is wonderful.

I have lots of separating discs like you are showing for my dental handpieces that are designed to cut stainless steel and really hard beryllium metals.

Frankly having a dental/denture lab for over 30 years allows me to have all the fun toys for my model building.  Not to mention casting and duplicating materials.

Well, that explains it all! And all this time, I thought you were just a great ship modeler. It's sort of like picking up a guy at the clubhouse to fill out a foursome and finding out on the fifth hole that he's Tiger Woods in disguise! :D

That's funny....

However, the best tool in the hands of the adequately unlearned, unskilled is just as apt to produce the same level of poorly executed golf game.   Or ship model, if you prefer to be on subject.

If my account of the time line is correct....I didn't install the *game changing* advantage until I had completed my project using the most  primitive of tools.  That would be a 5 lb sledge hammer and a fork....oh....and some Elmer's.

Rob(thanks for the best compliment ever)

i kno i know. i have checked all of them :) From her resting place? are you deep diver or did i miss something on this chain?

its very cool indeed. Im in awe that modeling is pretty much art rpetty much traveling back in time and romantically resurrecting history etc....at

east for me....fyi , i have few weeks till I finish cutty and . guess what. Plans for flying fish already on the way to me. :) I m happy i could count you as a foremost source of helping hand if needed advice. but i am gonna read prior to that few books about that. as much as i adore cutty sark in its own way, and hate :) diffficulty she posses with all the ornametation, apart of innovations she represents boyous era of wealth in its own way. Mckays clippers represents in my opinion what would be called today understated timeless beauty, not trying to show off wealth by overdecoration but simply represented by sharp design without any need of further decorations. yet still decks and cabins pretty much represents clear typical design of new world era with wooden knees, very different from what was going on in wuoprw. i have to study this more im just observing those designs and trying to guess....but  that long poop deck and mizzen mast in middle of it is georgous...must be probably genuine design isnt it?

On page 4, post #3   I briefly explain the artifacts.   The Glory of the Seas, at the end of her life, was run aground just south of Seattle and was burned for the copper and iron in her hull.

During an extreme low tide I waded out to her wreck, found her exposed from the sand and excavated some remains.  What's left of her is buried under the sand and about 4 ft of water.

Not only is she one of my favorite clippers...the last clipper donald McKay ever built....I have in my possession artifacts from her.   What a modelers/collectors joy.

I've finally finished the wall mounting for my Glory Model.  I added two iron pin samples that were excavated from her resting site and a short description of the vessel and artifacts found.

Now I need to finish the model...which by the way I will be working on the yards in earnest come next month when my schedule clears.

Yes it is very fascinating.  These relics are all that remain of her iron pinnings.   Long iron pins used to *bolt* her frame members together.  The exposed wood is long been decayed.   I was just unable to acquire any preserved wood that may lie deep beneath the sandy rocky sediment.   But what I came away with is satisfying...knowing I actually own a piece of a vessel I adore that is over 130 years old.

Who else do you know who can say that?  I am amazingly fortunate.

I have an old image of the remains of Glory in the late 30's with Donald McKay's son and grandson standing on the remains.  Here you can clearly see the iron bolts that held her wood members together.  It is some of these that I excavated.  Along with  some smaller pieces.
