DKM Scharnhorst by Paul Salomone - 1:72nd Scale German WW2 Heavy Battle Cruiser

Recommended Posts

Hello Daniel and Brian, :piratetongueor4:

Thanks for looking in and your kind interest.

Daniel - To answer your question - no, I don't have any tooling or press, just my bare hands, a surgical blade, and many cuts. That's life my friend, wasn't born rich (just joking).

Found some more time, so time to post more pics. These are related with the construction of the afterdeck structure.

Here goes.

The base of the structure.

the model is a piece of history, and should be reflected as it was, without changes

Its all part of Kev's journey, bit like going to the dark side, but with the lights on

Hi Paul, my apologies mate, I had not noticed the rebirth of your excellent log before this.  I will now be following along in your wake again as this wonderful model progresses.  i do hope you will reshow how you achieved some of the great detail you achieved on the radar installations?

Paul,

It's good to see your Scharnkorst groing on MSW mark 2!

As for the discussion re political symbols, it is MSW's policy not to allow any political, religious, racial or sexual symbols or content except where such symbols are an intergral part of the historical depiction of the model, such as, for example, Nazi symbols as they were displayed on German WWII ships at the time.

As has already been pointed out, this is a model building forum and politics, race, religion or sexual content has no place here.  All members are welcome as model builders no matter what views they may personally hold.

Good morning all, :P

Hello Pat - Thanks for looking in, Yes, I shall be posting all the progress pictures, and of course the radar shall be included. I also have to include the new progress pictures as well.

Hello John - Well said - That is exactly what I have been trying to point out. History is history, and cannot be mixed up with politics.

Just arrived in the office, and have a site meeting this morning, so I shall be posting some progress pictures in the afternoon.

Cheers

Then you, Sir, would have made a fine surgeon! The symmetry of your cuts, especially the port holes is amazing. I love models of this period but wonder where one displays them, due to their size.

Hi Paul

I still marvel what you did and can do with simple cardboard and a knife!

This could be a kind of lightweight construction. Any idea how much your elegant monster weights (or shouldn’t I ask about the weight of a lady?) and how long is she again?

Cheers

Peter

I am still the only one in the office, so I can post some more pictures.

Paul I had not realized how much of this ship you had made out of card. But now I see that it is really a multimedia model incorporating all sorts of materials. Nice job on the range finder.

The radar is placed on the copper wire assembly, with a little help from the mini chuck. This adds some weight to the assembly, to keep it in place under tension, until the super glue dries up.

Hello all,

Hello Michael,

hello Grant,

Hello Brian,

Hello Daniel,

Thanks for looking in and for the kind words.

Yes, although the ship's main items are constructed from cardboard, all the detailing is made from aluminium, brass copper, styrene, spring steel, pvc, resin and spring steel.

We always organise our scale model exhibitions at the Malta Maritime Museum, and the curator together with his director, would like to put their hands on it, but shall do so after entry to the afterlife.

Yes the radar installation at last. It's a long session as there are quite a lot of pics to post.

Cheers

Good morning all, :piratebo5:

Hello Ben and peter, Thanks for the encouragement. I really need it. At the moment I am finalising the detailing of the inside of the wheelhouse/admiral's bridge, and is making me go crazy, but at the end, it will be worth it.

Today, I am posting the first part of the construction pictures related with the assembly of the FuMB 4  SAMOS radar.

here goes.

If you could power that up it looks like it would work, Paul. Terrific stuff.

All of your seemingly different materials look perfect after painting. Have you described the painting process in any of your photos? What do you fill in the seems with (at cardboard joints)?
