Got the file, thanks! though it turns out its the same as included with the kit.

I fabricated the chainplates with a little bending fixture and took a couple pics with them loosly placed on the channels.

This is where I discovered the middle sweep port happens to align partially behind the chainplates instead of between, due to the chainplates aligning to the rake of the mast. Now I need to decide if I can live with the sweep port behind the chainplates or fill and eliminate it (fill and paint bulwarks, redo 2 planks outside between gunports).

I'm leaning toward leaving it as is, since I'm doubtfull I can cleanly remove the outside planks without causing additional damage.

I blackened all the metalwork using black patina, it seemed to work pretty well. I was able to do all the brass with one dose, but had to double dose the brittania metal. With the brittania, most would buff off after the first dip, but a quick in-and-out a seconds time produced a durable black finish. The brittania seemed to pollute the solution pretty quick as well, while the brass solution lasted much longer.

Next up: Finish up the cannons, install all the ringbolts and cleats, assemble & rig the anchors and bouys

Hi Ken

Those chainplates look good. I left off that sweep port in antiipation of the very problem you have encountered but I agree with your decision to leave it be. Once the shrouds are on you'll hardly see it anyway. Another choice though could be to put a swivel gun post over it?

Ken,  Nice job on the chainplates.  I found the same issue with the port sweep but elected to leave it open.  IMO, closing it up will take away from the symmetry of this beautiful ship.

I've been working on the cannon and rigging. I completed the Breech lines by lashing one end to a ring-bolt, routing through the cannon carriage ring bolts, bonding the loop around the end of the cannon, and then lashing the other end to a ring-bolt.

I did the lashings by securing the ringbolt in "helping-hands" clip and routing the line through the ring and securing it in the other clip, then doing the lashing.

I need to order some 1/8 blocks to complete the cannon rigging, until then just installing misc dech cleats and bolts

Hi Ken,

Your AVS is coming along very nicely. I did my chainplates the way you did yours. After forming them I filled in the valley between the two pieces of wire with silver solder that I then filed smooth.

I'd like to post a build log for my AVS but like MSW I also have had a fatal hard drive crash. I back everything up (or so I thought) but when I did a restore to a new drive I found that the folder that had all my AVS stuff in it did not have that all important little checkmark to signify I wanted it backed up.

I've been working on a lot of misc small jobs still in process:

  • Adding cleats and rings to the hull.
  • Assembling anchors, now to rig them with bouys.
  • Bowsprit details and finish
  • Cannon rigging
  • Need to order 1/8 blocks (supplied 5/32 size too big, previous build logs MSW 1.0) and other stuff.
  • Install Chainplates
  • Mount on pedestals and display board

Need to build a couple fixtures: Rope coil jig per dummies site and some block tumblers per another thread on this site.

I used "Black Patina". Its a product available at stained glass supply/mfr stores. I did multiple dips then rinse and wipe which left a nice black finish with a bit of silver showing through on the cannons.

There is a thread in the painting section describing the product, for me it worked well on the brittania metal, but I got mixed results on brass and copper.

  • 4 weeks later...

I've finished rigging the anchors, I went with having them lashed since I'm planning on having her under sail.

I was ready to pull my hair out rigging the bouys... that was a very fiddly task, and causes me to worry somewhat about the rigging process.

The cannons are loosly placed, next is to rig the tackle and bond them in place.

I need to build my block tumbler to help out with all the cannon tackle blocks, I purchased a set of 1/8" blocks to use instead of the 5/32" ones.

I want to finish the bowsprit, I've been looking for a pine stain that is waterbase, and may try a couple different paints that are close in color.

Here is my first fully rigged cannon. Sorry about the fuzzy pics, I'll start using a regular camera or better phone camera.

The crew says the Captain is a real pain in the a**, he likes the lines coiled down neat as if for an Admirals inspection...ARR! :pirate41:

I replaced the 5/32 blocks with smaller 1/8 blocks based upon previous logs info and feedback.

The guns look good. That was a good call using the smaller blocks. The 6 inch blocks look great.

Hi Ken

Great work on the cannons - your AVS looks really good - the deck is fantastic. Don't fret about the rigging. If you can do the bouys you'll fly through it. Look forward to your progress and updates.

Well, I've completed the cannon rigging and working on getting all the spars fabricated.

I now need to get the sailmaker (wife) involved, as I plan to include sails and hope to be able to lash the mainsail to the hoops before they are installed over the mast.

For the Bowsprit, Jibboom, and Mainmast I used the "drill spin and sand" method.

I tried making a bowsprit with a trimming plane, but only managed to create scrap, so for now I havent had much luck with the planer.

I'm not quite sure how I'll taper both ends of the spreader and topsail yards, maybe just by hand (planers bad news for me right now  ) any suggestions? Probably just by hand.

Hi Ken

I missed your latest post. Your AVS is looking mighty fine! I found that the model really starts to take off from here on - acquires a whole other dimension with the masts and spars. I hand sanded all of those parts and aside from the choking dust and the hard labour involved, it worked out just fine. I look forward to seeing your progress as your AVS comes to life!!

Well, finally got back to some modeling! Sort of took the summer off to keep the kids busy.

I completed the Bowsprit, Jibboom, Mast, Topmast but still need to fabricate the rest of the spars

I installed the Bowsprit with the lower standing rigging and footropes and started on the standing rigging for the mast.

Next is: complete the spar fabrication, install the Jibboom, complete standing/running rigging setup, fabricate sails.

Tricky part is getting the mainsail installed with gaff and boom: before, after, or ??? the completed standing rigging.

Standing rigging order of installation question on my AVS

The order of stays and shrouds over the mast is:

  1. Horse
  2. Backstay
  3. Shroud pairs alternating P & S
  4. forstay
  5. Jibstay

But in order to keep the rake of the mast accurate, it seems I need to install the fore and aft stays for the rake angle and then the shrouds for P&S alignment.

Should I just approximate the length for the heart and deadeye attachments (keeping all shroud/deadeyes equal length) and use the lanyards for final adjustment? The back and Jib stays are on tackle, so easy to fine tune but dont want to be too far off for the others.

Thanks
