HMS Victory by romiol - Caldercraft - 1:72

Recommended Posts

Hello everybody

Well, it’s too sad that all earlier postings are lost! Now, let’s start again with filling this wonderful forum.

I started my Victory in autumn 2011, was very busy until spring when I had to busy myself with other tasks (paper modelling). In last autumn I restarted with wood modelling while still being busy with card too.

First I will show you the coppering. I decided to use copper tape instead of the delivered plates. This was mainly because I don’t want to work with CA (which ends in strong problems with my broncheas). I also decided to do the coppering according to the original, meaning to have 12 copperbands on top and the rest
of them leading to them from the bottom. In addition the copper plates should overlap as usually in the Royal Navy, the upper band goes under the lower one and not the other way round as in merchand ships. So I had to start along the waterline and moving downwards. First I draw the lines with pencil and then I cut the foil into plates and then sticking them to the hull.

So much for the moment.

Cheers,

Rosmarie

The armament

All cannons on the upper gun deck are fully rigged - took me quite some time but was worth the trouble. I decided add all tackles and eyepins before the guns were fixed on the deck. It was easier to handle the guns but not easier to glue them on deck.

Cheers,

Rosmarie

The decks

The following pictures show the belfry, barricade, gratings, and other "small" but important details of the decks.

Well, I know, it's not as it was in the earlier, lost version - then I did spend much time for writing which also meant to look after the English terms of all those parts on the vessel. I cannot do this once again, else I would need months for rebuilding the log - so I just add some of the many pictures I uploded so far.

So some more pictures of the past months...

Cheers,

Rosmarie

Next comes the bow / front part as well as some pictures showing the whole vessel.

With this I will finish the upload of old pictures. At the moment I am busy with the water buckets - they are ready but I didn't yet find a good solution to hang the tiny parts on their places...

Cheers,

Rosmarie

Your build is coming along very nicely, I really like your copper plating. Using the tape and overlapping the plates was a good idea.

Hello

From now on I will continue my build log. If everybody has questions regarding to the older – lost – part, just ask them, I’m always ready to help you with tips and/or pictures.

In the last days I constructed the stairs to the poopdeck and glued them in place. The rail will follow when everything in this region is finished because I fear to break it while working on the water buckets.

I also finished the barricade (? Or how is this thing names on which the water buckets are hanged???) and prepared the buckets: I drilled holes and put the “ropes” through them. At the moment I’m waiting for THE GOOD IDEA how to hang them on the small hooks…

Cheers,

Rosmarie

its nice to see all the builds coming back online, thank you, im sure between us we can fill the gaps, to help others, i do however have phots from all parts of my build - lots of them, it is the silly chit chat i am missing in my build log, already i have had requests to see pictures of my wabbits

- they will be returning to a forum soon - maybe tonight

Its all part of Kev's journey, bit like going to the dark side, but with the lights on

All the best

Thanks for all the kind words!!

Jerry: I hope you won’t have to wait too long and that you start your own build log of your Victory. And sure, everybody in the forum will help you, just ask…

Kevin, garym, mort: thanks for looking by and for your kind comments.

Anja: thanks for the compliments, especially since it comes from an extremely talented lady. I mean, it’s nice to find other female modellers in this forum.

Since the absolutely brilliant idea didn’t arrive while sleeping this night, I simply started with gluing the water buckets at their places, with thick CA. I will wait until tomorrow, when everything is absolutely fix and then I will care for the ropes, hang them over the hooks, then some watered wood glue over the know and then some dark colour – I don’t want the ropes to shine…

In the meantime I started with the work on the galion. The first paint is done with some smears… Well, tomorrow a second and better one will follow anyway…

Cheers,

Rosmarie

Hi Rosmarie,  You've made wonderful progress since I last looked in (on the old site). Completing the bow and stern makes it look like a real ship. While you are having trouble recalling the English terms, I'm lucky if I can remember how I did things.  I've enjoyed your log and look forward to many more posts.  Cheers, Gil

Gil: Yes, it’s real tough work form to find all those special nautical terms in English. Many of them are not in a usal German/English dictionary at all. And while the PC on which I work is in the living room, the books about Victory are in the workshop downstairs… One more reason why I love the re-upload of your log, there I can see what’s the English term of a lot of those parts I’m building.

Hello everybody

I couldn’t work much on my Victory in the last few days. Last Friday-night the heating facility in my workshop crashed. And since  temperatures are freezing (-3-10 degrees C) on Saturday morning the room was more than just cool, it was cold (only 5 degrees C!). I had to carry my Victory upstairs to the living room because I feared that the low temperature could made the wood work too much…
And since our brilliant electrician (he made the 30 years old industrial heater blower work after years of unused) is in skiing for a few days I have to wait… But he promised to arrive tomorrow.

The good thing – I had more time for working on my card model….

Cheers,

Rosmaire

PS: Fortunately the palm trees will not suffer as long as it doesn't freeze in the room and as you can see, Victory temporarily serves as carrier...
