HMS Greyhound by Old Collingwood - Corel

Recommended Posts

I decided today  (well the admiral did)  to tidy out a cupboard  so I could better home my boat bits, very good job was done so it was  double rum and biscuits,    after doing this it inspired me to work out my next progress with the build.

It occured to me that the hatchway with steps (still needed steps)  anyway  its right next to where the capstan will be located (and as I dont want any accident claims from sailors falling down the hatch whilst doing capstan duties)    I have decided to lay a few planks fitted flush with the hatch frame,   have to make the ship as safe as possible the crew will have enough to contend with during battle.

Thanks mate,   yep thats what I thought   I  didn't want any sailors putting insurance claims in against the captain.

Good day folks,   I found a bit of mojo so I decided to attack the boat yard,   I decided to work on the hatch that needs covering next to the capstan first,  my idea is to put two supports a mil (mm)  ot two below the hatch frame, then when these two supports are set I will lay some boards across the supports.

While this was setting I decided to do another temporary cover in the shape of a gratting, this will cover the second hatchway from the bow,   the idea here is during action the gun deck will need as much free space as possible, so the captain would order as many hatchways to be covered as possible, but to still keep some light and air getting to the lower deck, a gratting was used aswell as boards.

So I constructed a gratting and sanded it to fit, then droped this into place in the forward (second from bow) hatchway.

I also started work on one of the stair cases (very fiddly delicate work)

Here are a few pics folks.

Oh also  sincere thanks to all who take the time to view my work, comment  and hit the like button.

OC,

In battle, all the gratings would have been sent below.  As for the steps and capstan, the steps would only need to be covered when using the capstan.   i like the utility of what you're doing for that hatchway.

Thanks mark,   with the hatch nearest the capstan I decided to attach to side pieces to hold a few sections of planks,   but with the added grating   "shhhhh  dont tell anyone - I cheated,   as I dont have enough ladder making material to make three seperate ladders - so I threw a grating in there instead:("

More progress with the steps today,  as the weather has changed again  so some bench time was calling me,   I finnished  the steps by cutting the length to suit the deck height, then after a bit of sanding to get a tight but accurate fit, I applied a small amount of pva and set them in place, after a few hours I finnished with a coat of flat top coat to seal them in.

That's what I use:

https://www.gorillatough.com/product/gorilla-wood-glue/

I haven't tried Titebond or some of the other glues people use here, but the Gorilla glue dries clear and has very good adhesive power.  It's all I've been using since starting the hobby.

A little more progress tonight,  firstly I discovered my own design fault with the extended forecastle deck,  the edge of this ends close to the second canon port opening,  and a ladder was supposed to be placed here,   but it would be in the way of the canon and  working crew,   I thought about building a small deck extention (lke on the Victory from her poop deck)    but that wont look right,  so I decided to create a small verticle ladder fitted against the forward bulkhead,  possibly with a rope secured into both decks by a ring attachment.

I aslo worked on and fitted the two knightheads, from a piece of 1.5 1mm that had to be reduced in thickness by 50% where it fits against the front curved bulwark.

Pictures tomorrow.;)

Thank you sincerely mate:)   Im at the (get the fittings done  covered by the poop deck)  stage  these are two 9pdr canons (Im going with the cast carvings as 1/100 scale is too tiny to make them from wood)  they are getting the filling down process to clean them up including making the wheels slightly narrower,  they will just have the breaching rope attached and painted up accordingly.

Also to go in place will be the ships wheel and compass base also any fittings along the bulwark that would have been fitted under the poop deck area.

OC.
