USS Constitution by lambsbk – Revell – 1/96 - PLASTIC – With Fiber Optics

YoungTiger and wedge thanks for the kudos...and Torrens. What a nice complement from such talented folks.

Rick: you are right on the eyebolts. The eyebolts are placed 90 degrees to the bulwark. In those cases I did drill through. In fact, to get them even with the waterways I drilled from the outside! (I definitely used the Dremel for these steps.)The eyebolt stem then filled in the gap of the drilled hole when glued from the inside. The actual bolts do run through and through the bulwark of the ship however and so the effect actually enhanced the look. I used a little green modelers putty to fill a few of the gaps and it dried to look like copper rust. That was just good luck though.

The ring bolts are drilled from the inside at 45 degrees to the bulwark. I modified some eyebolts by heating the stems gently and bending them 90 degrees into a hook like form. Then they just hang from the drilled hole and glue secures them. That gives me the luxury of pre-rigging the breeching to the eyebolts before attaching it to the bulwark.

I hope that helps...I'll try to get some pics of these steps later.

Dave

I did paint the 'floor' of the gun deck (I think that is what they called the ceiling of the Spar deck) the same off-white (homemade antique white) color of the bulwark.

The 'extra' eyebolts came from the second kit. I probably would have had enough from the first kit since Andymech and others have warned about making (from wire) or replacing the plastic eyebolts for METAL ones in areas where strength is needed. I plan on following their sage advice and that leaves you with extra plastic ones (how many extra ones I do not know - yet)

Oh. And of course it took 2 or 3 coats of paint to do it. I probably should look for a cheap air brush. I think the off-white interior will look good if it can be visualized after the Spar deck is placed (my burdensome hope after working these details into the deck).

For those of you interested I started a separate thread to describe how I made the lanterns. It is still a thread in progress and I hope to finish it over the next week. Check it out if you are interested. http://modelshipworld.com/index.php?/topic/3163-fiber-optic-lanterns-ca-1845-196/

Hello Tim1786. Several members have used wood to make their decks. I personally do not know how those work out. If you do a general search in the main MSW home site for words such as 'constitution' and 'plastic' or 'Revell' you should see most of the builds for this ship. I expect you will find some of the deck methods you are looking for. Good luck.

Dave,

You really are a detail guy!  I love that kind of stuff.  I think it really brings the project alive.

I am thinking about starting my deck soon.  I saw what Evan said about his scribing technique and what John (jtilly) said on Finescale Modeler about going with holly stripping.  I think I will try scribing and I would be interested in how you scribed your deck.  Between you and Evan maybe I can avoid some rookie mistakes.  Once I get the decks scribed, I plan to go with Vallejo 110 (Deck Tan) which has a hint of green in it.  A light sanding should give it a holy stoned look.

Regards,

Verne

Verne: It really is a composite of techniques. Andy (andymech) really is the trailblazer in this area of the build. Check out his completed build at http://modelshipworld.com/index.php?/topic/129-uss-constitution-by-andymech-revell-plastic-196/. In addition, I gave a detailed idea of how I painted the decks on page 2 of this build as well. I hope that helps.

Rick:

Sorry to get these up so late for you. It shows the breeching bolts from the outside. The putty is obvious. I will probably paint it later to match the hull. You can see some of the bolts that have no putty as well. Up close it is easy to see but not so much from a distance at this scale.

This one has a light source reflecting to see the detail easier.

And really up close...

I am adding some detail about the eyebolts and their modifications. You can see the relative positions of the bolts in the pics of the canon breeching  on the previous page. The drawing below shows the drilled holes and their relation as viewed from the side. Note: they are not on top of each other. The breeching hole is adjacent to the gun port and the tackle hole is between the ports.

The ring bolts for the breeching of course are not ring bolts but eyebolts with the stems at 90 degrees bend. They are then inserted in the breeching hole above and the bend simulates gravity pulling the bolt down as seen in the breeching pics - again on the previous page. The eyebolts are bent by placing them in a row on tape then clamping them gently in a vise with only the stems showing. The vise protects the bolt eye. I used a heat gun to heat the exposed stems and a metal ruler to bend them all over 90 degrees when the had started to soften. It's a little tricky but most of them turn out ok. When complete I leave them on the tape until needed - a little filing to return the stem to the correct diameter and they are ready to lash to the breeching line followed by mounting on the bulwark.

After bending...

After reshaping a little...

post-916-0-07757800-1376436688_thumb.jpg

When complete the 90 degree bend allows them to 'hook' into the 45 degree hole and the glue does the rest.

Dave, nice job.  I expected the exterior hull to look much worse after the drill-thru and putty.  You really have to zoom the photos to even see the putty.   Maybe I'll do it... I am just so enamored with my spray paint job on my exterior(LOL)... well, I will decide when I get to this step.  I have some time.  I am 60% done with the hull paint and still have the decks to do, so it will be a while before I must decide.

However, I am really impressed with the detail for this part of the build, and I think I will try something similar.

Hi Dave...(and followers !!)...Kim Here...!!!! I haven't added anything lately, however, I've been following the build, along with everyone else !! Your work continues to be inspiring for us 'Detail Freaks' I suppose....at least for myself anyway !! I did run into the 'Eyebolt' issue, (the oversize, & 'optical' scale issue, and went through my 'parts' in the deep....from the older 'Cuttys' and 'Thermopylaes' that I have, and found that their eyebolts, by inj. molding, were almost...get this...1/2 the size of the ones furnished with the Connie...a real 'Double-Taker' (if you will..!!) ( I'd never used any of these before, due to making my own at the time of construction, et al )...This was certainly handy when needing to add them to the cannons (when Revell doesn't supply them automatically with the kit...unfortunately.)... on each 'Tree' from both the Cutty. and Thermopylae, there are only 44 available in each kit...(I'll supply a photo shortly)...fortunately, I had enough older kits in stock to do this, and have enough to complete all requirements for the never ending need for 'Part 13'   .Anyway, All...Blessings, and keep the postings coming ...!!!  Kim

Yes Kim part 13 is a strange breed. It is definitely oversized for the projects and I do not think I will be using it in the more visible areas of my build due to lack of strength of the part and it's scale discrepancies. I would be interested in seeing those pics Kim. Do you have a link to them?

I was getting a little bored with the breeching (arghhh...and that does not include the tackle for each gun!) but they are 75% done. Anyway I decided to put a few of the elements I have been working on for the last few months together (the 'mini-models' Verne ;) ). So I worked the forward end of the gun deck.

I did not like the look of the flimsy bow sprit bitt and so shored it up a little 'bit.' It is probably not quite vintage but there is only so much I could  do (i.e. because of the bow sprit being molded to the existing Revell brace.) I added a longer anchor cable from Chuck's Syren Model Ship Co. (Tan 0.62 diameter) and dropped it through the corners of the midship cargo hatch. It is secured around the riding bitts but I think I will need to revise these moorings just a little.

I never got why Revel never included such details as bitts, stove, etc.  As you've shown, these details add a great deal to the model.

I always thought a mini-diorama of the crew clearing for action and breaking down the cabin bulkheads would be a nice touch, but two of the three I've built were RC and had no gundeck to speak of.

A couple of simple changes but here are the revised pics. I am hoping it is right but if not it is easy to change right now. Once the anchor cable is rigged rightly I'll work the rope and give it a little gravitational effect.

From here...it's back to the never ending canons and a try at the tackle hooks and blocks.

Very nice details, the anchor rope looks really good.  Glad to see your progress, and I really like the finish on the deck.  Keep up the good work.

Well Dave,

I just reread your log and I can see that I need to read it again with a notepad handy.  I was so green before that I didn't get a lot of what you were sharing.  I am starting to focus now.  Wow, you guys are good!

Thank you for the tip on the riding bitts.  I suppose I should pay more attention to the AOTS on my desk.

Hi Dave, I should be in Boston next week, and hopefully see Henry. I haven't heard from him yet, so I hope he will be able to show us around the Conny. Any particular pictures you might need send me a list and I'll try to get them for you.

I posted this on another thread but wanted to add it to my build log. The prototype block and hook were completed today. This shows a double 2mm block with becket and hook which will be used on the gun tackle. The process is fairly reproducible and has a fair result.

Just to give you an idea of the size here the block rope is the same size used to seize the canon breeching (see pics ion previous pages.)

Dave,

I typically don't comment and just click the like button, but your hook is the best formed hook I have ever seen.

Happy modeling,
