Vasa by Ulises Victoria - FINISHED - Corel - Scale 1: 75 - Royal Ship

Recommended Posts

Update: JAN 23/14

I finished the shrouds and ratlines of port side. Here are some photos. Flashlight plays some funny games over certain black lines, making them look too shiny. They don't look like that in person.

I need to pay more attention to the alignment of the deadeyes, I know!.

Also, my choice of tan thread came out too light. Nothing I can do about it now.

Here's 2 lessons learnt.

You will see some loose lines here and there. They are not definitely fixed yet.

Thank you Mark.

Rope is my own, using a Byrnes ropewalk machine. Except the anchors cable, which I used because I still did not have the machine, everything else is made by me. Also the thinnest lines are just used directly from the spool.

Thank you Matti. Coming from you that is a big compliment!

I am working on the lower-starboard shrouds and ratlines. I hope to finish the standing rigging soon, so I can start with the running and finish my ship! :)

Thank you Frank. In all honesty I have mixed feelings with the machine. I have to say it makes very nice rope, but I get tired pretty soon when doing it.

You need to have both hands at work and your attention and eyes fixed on the area where the rope is twisting, so you can control the speed at which your right hand turns the take up spool.

I have another machine, but this one makes only short segments of rope. About 1.30 mts. So you need to load the machine several times to make enough rope of a given thickness. Byrnes machine shines at making a continuous rope, limited only by the amount of thread you load in the spools.

Hope this helps. If you have any more questions, please ask!

  Hola Ulises!!

I didnt see your log for a time but your work, as usual, is fantastic.

I continued with my Vasa and just finished the galleries and stern.  It was a new experience trying to color the plastic figures with detail, at first I though of painting all gold, more or less as your model, but seeing the marvelous work that Matti (Nazgul) did, I decided to go to the colored version, although at first they seem to be unreal or like a Disney version.   I tried to paint the figures with the original color as can be seen in the Vasa museum page, but many others were by my own because they dont appear in that page.

Saludos

Heinz. You are doing a terrific job restoring that ship. I don't think I would ever attempt something like that.

Keep us posted.

No way. I would say that Vasa is very fortunate to have landed in your skilled hands instead of the trash bin. :)

Update Feb/12/2014

Today, at 9:52 AM I tied the last of the clove hitches that form my Vasa's shrouds and ratlines.

This may mean nothing to you, but to me it marks the finish of the standing rigging in my ship, (buh-bye ratlines tying.See you again in my Royal Louis, a few years from now.  :D )

I'm including some photos. If you notice some loose lines laying around, it's OK. They will be properly trimmed when the time comes.

Comments, critiques and anything else you may write: Welcome!!!

Wow,wow and wow again Ulises !!!!

One remark....you have to CLEAN up your bench !!!!!!!!  :D  :D

Maybe a tip.

When you make pictures, take the model to a place where is nothing around it.

Now the eyes went somewhere else then the model.

It looks to busy.

When you have only the model on the picture, you will SEE the model.

It gives more right to your work then.

LOL: If there is one thing I am bad at, is to keep my workspace clean and organized. I've been like that all my life. I doubt I will ever change.  B)

Take into account that what you see in the photos is just about ALL the room I have to build. That is a blanket closet, so I have everything cramped in a small space.  Forget about power tools bigger than a Dremel.

The tip about taking photos in a "clean" environment is totally valid, though. I will take it into account my next photo sessions. Thank you for your input!

I couldn't help it but to be a bit embarrassed by Sjors' remark. :P So here is a photo of my bench after a bit of clean-up. I bought new tools this weekend so I thought that a clean bench and new tools would be better to start the last phase (running rigging) of my Vasa. (Before and after photos)

When I read this the page on my screen had only scrolled enough to show the first picture and I think I spent about 2 full minutes trying to work out which part you had tidied up hahaha.

But seriously, your ship looks so good I didn't even see your workspace  :)

BTW, there was a sail in this mizzen lower yard. (see previous page) According to Vasa Museum plans there was no sail there,

so it had to go. I'm glad the sail went off without major consequences. :)

I'm surprised no one catch that mistake before!!!  :o

Looks very good Ulises

I decided to wait before I start with this "nightmare" of the rigging :)

Joking, I wait till the book Vasa II is issued in which the rigging will be described

Thank you Matti!

Jan V. Rigging a ship is the only kind of nightmare I really enjoy! :)

I will buy the Vasa II book when it comes out, but by then my ship will be hopefully finished.

Still, I think it will be an interesting reading and a definitive valuable addition to my stash of nautical books.
