Herreshoff Buzzards Bay 14ftr By Pete48 - SMALL 3/4" = 1'- 0" - Finished

Recommended Posts

The planking looks good so far. One thing I can tell you is to make sure you are getting good contact where the planks run off the transom. With the planks running past the transom, it is sometimes difficult to tell if you have nice plank seams around the edge of the transom. The better the seam is, the less filling you will have to do.

Thank you Russ, I know what your talking about, The transom seams are good so far . I do plan on using a west system epoxy resin to seal up the Hull, This one will go in the water for a Sail

Good Morning, Pete:

I had a Buzzards Bay 14 for fourteen years, until last month.  It came with a full set of plans which the original owner had acquired from either the Herreshoff Museum or the maritime museum at Mystic.

I had it rigged as a gaff cutter, with topsail; it was great fun to sail, well balanced, very flexible, powerful and a beautiful sight on the water.  I've attached a picture.

Good luck: it's a worthy project.

Thank you Steve , This has been a fun build, I desired to have one of these since my teens

Thank you David , I originally was going to build the 12 1/2 kit from Blue Jacket . I have had the plans for the Buzzards Bay 14 for at least 20  years . The Herreshoff books are fantastic as well I like the sensible cruising designs book and have had that just as long.

Thank you Rick , A Beauty you had there, Amazing boats when I lived in Seattle I was able to sail a 12 1/2 a few times on lake union, Fantastic handling boat.

Cap'n'Bob, we have talked about this one a few times, I may still make my ( end of ) Spring launching

Thank you for all the likes

Best Regards,

Pete

Today, I thought I would finish Planking the Herreshoff, However I realized that I did not cut in the 1/8" for the Transom. I decided that I would add a 1/8" X 1/8" strip  to the stern of the Keel, and move my Rabbet line 1/8" aft. That is somthing that I will remember for the next one ( and there will be a next one ) there are already a few things that I would do differently. ( That will be for the next build log ) Anyway I then started soaking my planking material while I finished shaping the sheer line ( I am pleased with the result ) It matches the Print . the Planking went smooth and all the seams are nice and tight. I did a good amount of Fairing . Next will be to finish the Planking and build a Cradle . I have had alot of fun building this boat ( my favorite so far ) and aside from the transom sticking out an extra 1/8" ( or the boat being 1/8" too long ) the rest of it is right on the money. Here are the results

Today I started by Building a cradle , while I pre soaked the material to finish the planking. Once the cradle was built I finished up the planking, athen I finished rough Fairing the hull. next it will need to be sanded with 600 grit, to get it ready for epoxy . I am very pleased with this build as it has been a challenge. Here are the results

I have to echo the previous comments regarding the sweet lines of this beauty. I do have a question regarding the transom it looks a bit odd sticking up above the planking is that the way it will look when finished? I ask this because of the picture that Rick posted of his boat.

Hello Michael, Yes the transom does go above the planking once the deck and cockpit coamings are installed it should look like the pics.

Your hull looks great.  It has that unique look that I like.  I still think planking that hull must have been trouble.

It was the bilge area I was talking about.  Herreschoft hulls were nice but you had to be very good at your craft to build them.

You are making one very sweet ride, Pete! Love how the planking turned out.

Are you going to replicate the vertical planking in the cockpit?

Edit:  Actually, looking at the photo a bit closer, it looks like strakes or battens in the cockpit sides...

Thank you Bob, she is a sweet ride , the battens you are refering to are actually bent ribs . I am very happy with this boat , next I will use a west sytem epoxy to seal it all up. I did start a version of Cap't Nates 12 1/2  the link to the  build log is in my signature

Next I will be concentrating on the cockpit,  the Mast step and supports . The plans show the benches and forward bulkhead as being open.  I will make them closed as well as adding the door. Does anyone know of a trick to make the louvers ? here are some pics of what I am going for

Today, I started on the Mast step ( wich was more complicated than I had first thought ) Fortunatly I had the Keel height correct ( per the plans ) I started by making a 6" length of mast ( at the correct specs ) Then I cut out  some 1/32" Birch ply strips, that would fit between the stations and run from top to bottom of the Keel. ( only for the mast step station ) I then cut out 3/32" material, and cut those pieces to run to the top of the frame. I then put the mast section ( that I had made )and cut out the piece to fit in the slot as per the plans. I then made the upper brace, installed the  1" ( scale ) block to the top of the frame ( toward the bow ) This will give me the correct mast angle.  I then installed the side pieces and the supports that run down the frame. I added the triangles for more support, they are not on the plans . ( I just felt they should be there to beef up that section ) The center piece of the mast step has not been glued in, I will wait at this point till I make the mast ( hopfully Sitka Spruce ) this will allow me some wiggle room when it comes time to fit the mast . Here are the results

Next I cut out a piece of 1/32" birch plywood to emclose the forward section of the cockpit. ( it has not been glued in so that I can still add details )  ) I cut for the deck camber and will add filler piece betwwen the ply and the mast step brace. ( this should make the mast section very solid ) I then cut out the rear cockpit bulkhead with the deck camber cut in as well ( it has not been glued ) Next will be to get the rear deck section framed in, and to frame in for the bench seats. Here are the results

Pete thanks for the answer, the pictures of the full size ones are making me drool all over the keyboard' regarding the louvres if you look at some of the shots of the lockers on Toni's build perhaps that will help sort them out they are 1:48 and yours are 3 times larger scale but smaller louvres so the same system might work.
