Hi Piet ( my grandfathers name is spelled like that )Thank you for the kind words.  The original plan 15 years ago was to build this boat in 1:1 . Herreshoff designed Boats are quite Beautiful , and I have had the good fortune to Sail the 12 1/2 ( his fathers design ) and it is a pleasure to sail . '

Best Regards,

Pete

Dear Pete:

I've been following your log with great interest.  You're doing an absolutely wonderful job on a design that, to me, has the possibly the most beautiful lines of any small sail boat.   Several years before I bought my own Buzzards Bay, I  saw it out of the water on a trailer, literally a jaw-dropping moment for me.  I've attached a picture taken from the port quarter which shows the beautiful sheer and transom design and how they work together so well.

Since you're now working on the cockpit, I attach a couple of other pictures.  You'll see that the builder departed from the plans in the cockpit area in respect of the shape of the coaming -- looks nice but was uncomfortable on the back when sailing.  Also, he omitted the doors on the compartment under the foredeck; that didn't look as good but it was practical because it eased quick access to the stuff -- anchor, extra rope, fenders, etc. -- stored there.  As well, with the pinrail and so many halyards and sheets right there, doors would have been even more awkward.

Keep up the splendid work.  I look forward to the final result.

Warm regards,

Rick

Thank you Rick , I have had a great passion for these boats since I was a kid . The Transom and sheer are what hooked me , I have sailed the 12 1/2 wich is an amazing boat ( I am building a proto-type 12 1/2 on another build log ) You have a very nice  Boat. I love the cockpit with the grating shes a beauty . Thank you for the pics and the encouragement I greatly appreciate it

Pete

I wanted to make a correction on an earlier post, Regarding the Birch ply on the Transom, Originally I said that it was 1/32" when it is actually 1/64"

Today, I started the day by preping the boat for epoxy . First I wiped the boat down with rubbing alcohol . Next I used a Cherry stain on the Transom . Then I mixed up a batch of West System G-flex Epoxy. This is the first time that I have used the G-flex . In the past I have always used the 105 Resin with the 205 Hardner .  I am glad that I tried it,  very simple with a  50/50 ratio ( so you dont need the pumps ) the pot life is longer as well as the cure time ( about 4 hours ) Next will be fairing the hull for primer . Here are the results

I started the day by Fairing the Hull, to get it ready for primer .  While I was fairing, my Wife was saying what a shame to paint such a beautiful Hull.  (  I had planned on painting white ) That Is the nice thing about the G-flex Epoxy is that you can Varnish right over it ( without it gettin milky ) She has 2 coats of Epiphanes Boat varnish . I am thinking 2 more coats, with  a White Waterline, after the 2 coats of Varnish ( My Wife was right ) I decided to name the Boat after Her,  so she will be called " Kate " . Here are the results

Lovely looking hull. I know inside the hull should be painted, however all she needs is a stripe along the waterline.

The advantage of a wood finish is no one will ever say, “Oh, a fiberglass boat.”

She looks sweet and a white stripe will be just right.

Well Today was the day to tackle the Water Line , ( not an easy task for me ) First I marked the line with a Sharpie using the water line jig that I had made. Next was to mask the line off the line . ( this took awhile to get it right ) Next was the Paint , I also put a coat of paint on the Cockpit Bulkheads. After the paint and unmasking there was some touch up . She came out pretty nice. Here are the results
