Greetings all

Well I have completed the fitting of all the blocks on all three masts, and spend quite a while checking for any blockages in the holes on all blocks and deadeyes , and did have to clear a few, I also had to replace one of the deadeyes which I damaged when clearing the hole that was blocked. There are a few cleats to fit on the base of the main mast and mizzen. The last thing I did was fit all three hand rails.so as far as I can see the masts are ready to fit in place. The bowsprit can be fitted now, but I am a bit wary about it, and have broken it twice now, by having it in place when there no need at all for it to be there. The rigging of the bowsprit looks a bit daunting to me, as I have said I am now in no mans land, I did note that grant and Gil mid started with the bowsprit first. The manual says the tackle pendants are first, followed by the lower mast shrouds. I have just bought a book on rigging by lennarth Peterson who refers to the tackle pendants as burton pendants whereas the jotika manual refers to them as tackle pendants and only the mizzen mast having burton pendants, so the novice is confused immediately. Any way I think I will start with the pendants ( tackle or burton ) the picture will do, then the lower shrouds which are pretty well detailed, ( he says hopefully). And with a bit of luck I should cotton on to things (get it !!) ......all advice no matter what is most welcome during this work, just stop me if I go, sorry when I go wrong.. You never know this could be enjoyable. Who am I trying to fool !!! I shall now disappear never to be seen again. Wish I'd built a yacht. By the way if you are building this ship you need a lazy Susan, it gets very heavy and cumbersome with the masts in place and you need to rotate it during the rigging. There is a photo of one one my last photo. Wish me luck chaps, it was nice knowing you all DAVID

Hi David,

Nice work so far.  Your are entering a very interesting part of the build.  Do you have a copy of Longridge? I have found this to be an almost indispensable aid for the rigging.  If you don't have it, you could do far worse than to follow Gil's log as Kevin has suggested.

To answer your question, according to Longridge Burton Pendants and Pendants of Tackles are one and the same thing (and Antscherl says the same thing in TFFM).  Two pairs were put over the lower mast head and one pair over the top masthead. The starboard pair was put on first.  The mizzen lower pendant was single and there was no mizzen top mast pendant. (from Longridge, pg 228).  If you need dimensions, let me know and I'll dig out the detail from Longridge for you.

Just think, it won't be long now and you get to do the Ratlines!!!!!  :o  :o  :o

Now would also be a good time to think about whether you want to stick with the kit provided blocks and rigging line, or to upgrade to some "Chucky Blocks" and line from Syren.  I've just ordered some line to do the Running Rigging (too late for the Standing Rigging), and I'm making my own blocks now following Chuck's method.

One final tip.  If you do go with a Lazy Susan, be VERY careful turning it once you get the bowsprit in! Don't ask me how I know....

Good luck with this very interesting, but SLOW part of the build.

Thanks everybody

Grant. I do have longbridges anatomy of Nelson's ships plus lennarth peterssons book on rigging, so I am off and running with the rigging, alas not quite as I have found two of my dead eyes on one of the channels out of position, they only need switching around. I will start with the pendants as I said earlier, and report in when they are fitted. Thanks a lot for your advice. DAVID

Hello yon

Thanks a lot yon , I think I am going to need a bit of luck at times. I know there will always be help to hand should I need it on MSW. I have already been given advice from grant, and as I say will need it. At this time my aim is to fit the tackle/burton pendants ( hangy. down things ) to be technical, this is on page 12 of your masts and rigging manual. And then fit all the shrouds. And so that is my plan for the next few weeks or however long. That is as far ahead as I have looked. Anyway it's good to see you back, were on earth have you been!!?? Be good and enjoy your build DAVID

Greetings all

Well I have still not started on my rigging. I would like to use bullseyes on the pendants. I am not sure if that is the correct term for them, but that is what Gil Middleton calls them. I don't like the idea of just having a plain cotton loop, it does not very good at all. I cannot track them down anywhere. I have tried Cornwall model boats and a few others but alas no joy. Does anybody know we're I might get hold of them.

Thanks a lot DAVID

David if by Bullseyes you mean thimbles(?), these are easily made by cutting a small piece of brass (or copper) tube and either painting it black or chemically blackening it. That's what I did anyway.

Greetings all

Well here we go again. The first part of my rigging phase. All the lower shrouds are fitted after a disastrous start. I had to chop all twenty two of the fore mast shrouds off after they got tangled up. I could not be chewed to untangle them, so I just ordered new dead eyes and needed some 1.3mm thread as there is very little surplus . I did not know about using bees wax until I spotted it on utube, and it makes things a lot easier.

So the lower shrouds are done and the futtock staves are fitted plus the futtock shrouds on the port side. This is a pretty awkward job as you have to tie eleven shrouds to the stave, and then the catcher-pins to the same stave, and finally the six futtock shrouds making twenty one fixings to the stave. I found it impossible to do a decent job on these. Just a point, jotika tell you there are six catherpins on both the foremast and main mast.

Longbridges anatomy of nelsons ships tells you there are four on each (page 230). So I only fitted four. While I was waiting for my order from CMB I made up the four davits for the port and starboard. I just used styrene for the treads to simplify things. The davits are seventeen feet long which at 1/72 scale is 72mm. There is a drawing of them in the rigging manual which shows them longer, so if my Maths are wrong or for some reason they need to be longer it will be easy to sort. Anyway that's my lot for now. I am off to finish the foremast. I will get the top mast shrouds fitted and complete the ratlines. So as I said, that's my lot for now. Catch you all at the main mast. Thanks a lot everyone. Here's some photos DAVID

Lovely work on your shrouds David.  Glad to know I'm not the only one taking things off and re-doing them!  The futtock shrouds on the foremast look really good...difficult to do without pulling the other shrouds out of line, but you've done them perfectly. Love the look of the masts with shrounds on them, it gives the model some "depth"...no longer a hull with sticks!

Nice work on the shrouds David, and well done for having the courage to take them off and re-do them.

Greetings all

Thanks a lot for all your comments. Well this rigging lark is going to take a long time, in fact a very long time. I have been working on the foremast only since my last visit, and intend to complete all the ratlines before moving on to the main mast. The port side ratlines are finished , and I will finish the starboard ratlines by Saturday. Like I said this is going to be a long job and will take a good month or more to complete all three. Anyway I am pretty happy with my progress, so here's a few photos for you. I am of to do some clove hitches.,DAVID

Greetings all

Thanks to you all for your viewing and all your comments. Well at last I can say goodbye to the foremast for a while. There are approximately 1,060 clove hitches and my spacings should have been closer, so in theory there should be more. I now intend to start the ratlines on the main mast and there are quite a few more knots than on the fore masts. So these are the last few photos of the foremast... Much of a muchness again.

Ok away I go , tweezers, thread and music in the background. So I will catch you all again when I get the lower ratlines on the main mast done.........have a nice Xmas everybody. Thanks a lot DAVID
