Hi Mark

Marvellous work. I reckon your patience, confidence and adept use of the Death Star are definitely paying off nicely.

Well done. I also agree with Michael about the removal of the large sheet...but, then again, I'm pretty impatient.

All in good time, I'm sure.

All the best.

Thanks for the comments and the "likes".

She'll be coming off the jig as soon as the last coaming is set into place and before the rest of the deck planking.   I found some nice 1/4" mahogany and i"ll make a cradle that will hopefully do her justice and not hide her lines.   I gave serious thought to pedestals but they just seem flimsy.  i have one ship on pedestals and I get nervous anytime I have to move it.

The longer I wait, the more problems I'll have once I begin removing the jig so time to bite the bullet and get her done.

Bear with me on this....

Minor milestone and then on to a major one....  :)

Finished the centerline hatchways.   Done... Finito...  I still have much to do on this deck still, but that is all going on hold.  I'm pulling her off the jig and making a cradle.  I gave some serious thought to only using pedestals but my experience with them is "iffy"...  so something a bit substantial that will look nice and not detract from her lines is in order.

Meantime, here's the picture and I think I'm ready for either new batteries, a new memory card, or a new camera...  something is acting up here.

Congrats on the milestone Mark. Can't wait to see her free of the jig!

As for the camera, sounds like you have an excuse to deploy HMS Visa into action again! ;)

Your hatchways look good and I like most of us here are looking forward to seeing her out of the jig. I also agree that the cradle is a smart way to go especially while you are still working on her. They provide much better stability than the pedestals do. I hope the transfer goes smoothly!

Mark I don't make many comments on your build because I feel like a dummy sitting in the back of the class , but I'm trying to absorb as much as my mind can comprehend and learn from master builders like you. Very impressive workmanship! :D

Beautiful Mark~!

I faced a similar decision regarding pedestals and decided the masters long ago had a good answer.  They used pedestals and braced the model with an iron or brass rod from the side of the ship to the base, port and starboard.  This method allowed full view of her lines.

Mark, Great  work.  Is the bend on the right side of the hatch combings a lens distortion?  Over the last many months I've take to using the camera on my iPhone (model 5 se.  Same technology as the 6 in the smaller case).  The pictures seem as good as the SLR versions of old.  A lot cheaper than a new camera.

Thanks for the likes and comments...

Confession time.. part of the problem is the camera.  It's a bit long in the tooth age wise and I'm seeing distortion to some degree on other pictures.  Not sure why though.    Part was the problem with the plan centerline not being straight.  I discovered it after the planking but before the grates.  The other part is me... I'm just not there yet in the skills department.  I'll be doing some sanding and see if I can minimize it but I also have the ship's boat covering most of the hatches in the center area.   I'll do a bit more sanding and shaping and see if I can fix it.

It's not as great a problem in person as the camera shows.  One of the reasons I'm looking at the camera on this is the two bitts for the pinrail by the mainmast.  In some pictures, those bitts are not parallel but canted outward.  Measurement says I'm damn near spot on.

I'm not a master at this... just a learner.  Luckily, I know where the bodies are buried so speak and have a long list of "you dummkopf..." type of things to watch out for.

Back to working on the cradles.....

Just had a more indepth look at your pic mark - i think its suffering from a photo term called pin cushion, this slightly rounds or puts a curve on straight lines - like in your center line of planking following the gratings, it something that might be helped if you zoom in slightly (If your are using a zoom lens) or if its fixed length lens it might be slightly to wide angle, perhaps move back slightly with the camera just to see if it helps a bit.

Thanks OC.

Major disfunction today...  cutting the cradle pieces, the power supply and possibly the tube died on the Deathstar.   Definitely the power supply though.  HMS Visa is slowly sinking by the bows....

Yepppers.. the joys of high tech.  I know from my racing days that when you push equipment, things sometimes go "boom".    Parts are ordered and enquiries into others.

I think the parts (tube and power supply) will be my present to myself.  I was hoping Santa would drop off a Byrnes Thickness Sander but... We'll have to see how fast repairs can be made to HMS Visa.

Ouch!! The Deathstar didn't realise it shouldn't die on itself!!! So much for hightech ... a lot of thech, far to high to be safe. Be glad USS Visa didn't sink, which cannot be said for EU Visa. We'll just have to wait a bit longer on your handcrafted planking ;)
