Bounty Launch by CaptainSteve - FINISHED - Model Shipways - 1:16 Scale - SMALL

Recommended Posts

Hey CaptainSteve,

Ya know in my reading I did find something you may make. This boat was originally a difficult task to "dip" the sails to the opposite side. Later on the yard was lowered just enough to dip the peak down around the mast and lifted back up on the other side. It didn't mention exactly how this was done.

If I stop researching right NOW, the squirrels may return! Possible use your bunt line to raise up most of your sail out of the way. Maybe a double pulley set up near the mast could aide the peak down enough to make the dip much easier. This would be much faster, and safer, to do, especially in crapy weather. I gotta go let the squirrels out!

Sorry for the typos I was using a tablet at the time and using my big fingers is not easy.  Should be flemish and grapnel. :(

Wi’ the hot Australian summer uponeth him, CaptainSteve hath discovered that his modelling room was designed by the same Swedish gnomes who doth maketh saunas and steam-rooms.

Nonetheless, Our Hero didst stealeth some hours this past eventide to ticketh one further item from his list.
post-675-0-05293300-1423366070_thumb.jpg

“Verily, I didst umm and ahh, dither and dally upon this point,” he was heard to mutter, perhaps by way of explanation.
For whilst he was most proud of the wood-graining which hadst been doneth, CaptainSteve couldst not shaketh the feeling that his boat didst lacketh something for want of the external tree-nails.

“Hence, I do presenteth unto Ye me scratched-up water-line … ”, he didst declare, perhaps a little too triumphantly.
First up, Our Hero didst contrive to obtain a highly specialised tool in the field of ship-building – that being the water-line marker …
post-675-0-83754200-1423366072_thumb.jpg

“And, thence, I didst set about tapething off the top part o’ me planking,” CaptainSteve announced.
post-675-0-18894700-1423366075_thumb.jpg

“… a’fore painting in my water-line using a mix of matt White acrylic and thinners.”
post-675-0-10672000-1423366078_thumb.jpg

After a couple of coats had been allowed to dry (taking some three and a half minutes in Our Hero’s work-room/sauna), he didst cutteth it back wi’ fine-grit sanding blocks.

“And, here in this next pic,” CaptainSteve beganeth, “me Launch doth lie lazily upon the almost-completed display-board made from bark.”

I like your water-line marker there Captain. Your inventiveness knows no bounds Sir. Looks good setting on top of her future perch. I'm not sure how you'd want that base-board to be in the end Steve, but if you're wanting a smooth, and flat finish on the top, they make a product that's clear like varnish, only way thicker and dries as hard as plexi-glass. You just build up the sides about an 8th or quarter inch, like a tray, and pour it on and let it flow out to the edges until it levels itself. When I remember the name of it I'll get back to you. Use to use it on table-tops with carvings in them.

Cheers

GEORGE

Thanks, George ....

But the rough bark look is pretty much what I was going for in the first place. At the time, I was quite prepared to ditch it and start again if I didn't like it, but in the end, it's come out as good or better than I'd hoped.

The wood was "baked" at low temperatures to kill off any creepy-crawlies (and there were a heap at first), and has been sealed with aircraft dope. I need to trim the edges square, and attach the black trim all around (in the above pic, it is just positioned in place for the photo). Then, I'll fit a pair of brass pedestals for the Launch to sit upon.

Hey CaptainSteve the bark looks really awesome! The white waterline makes the boat look like it's floating! The contrast does an excellent job of separating the boat from the stand, well done Sir!

Check the model railroad shop and look for Woodland Scenics "Realistic Water". Just pour from the bottle. Seal up the edges of the pour area tightly. If you don't, it will find the floor or "wherever" underneath your project sits. Ask me how I know. Anyway, pour it about an 1/8th to 1/4 inch (3-5 mm) deep and let it sit. It pours milky, but dries clear. When dry, you can add another thin layer.

Ken,

Having used THAT phrase before, I am completely aware that you really need videos (or a copy of the insurance claim/police report) to properly explain what happened next ...

Arrr ...

Precious little accomplished (again !!). CaptainSteve was absent from his shipyard this past week, as he had to house-sit for CaptainAndrew. This involved looking after the Captain's dog, cat and wide-screen TV !!

However, the base-stand has now been completed, and thus ...

post-675-0-05738500-1423990382_thumb.jpg

... one further item he didst ticketh off.

The base-board was trimmed to size, the pedestals fitted, the edging added, and a couple of coats of subdued gloss Tung Oil applied ...

To be honest, Our Hero be mightily chuffed wi' the outcome ...

Outstanding CaptainSteve. I really like that barks texture, it gives everything dimension. So now that you've crossed the stand off on your list, what are the two new items added to the list? I started to make a list at one point and gave up, I haven't even thought about the stand yet!

Very nice indeed. If I ever build the Endeavour, or similar vessel, I will use the same technique. Thus I will have a barque on bark.

I wasn't sure about how that bark would look when you started it but I have to say it looks really great! Very creative.

Well CaptainSteve there's the matter of one said compass that in see was cleverly not, added to your list. And, didn't I just figure out what a barracoe is? And...dolphin fillets? Er, ugh, I might regret saying that one. But when you're starving...well, or just really hungry...I think go back to eatin my pizza.

Well CaptainSteve there's the matter of one said compass ...

Well, I do gotta admit that the compasses you and Buck made looked pretty darn good !!

How about I start a "Maybe" list ??

I'll put a compass at the very top.

And, didn't I just figure out what a barracoe is? And...dolphin fillets?

True true ... but I'm beginning to see that there is realism in a model AND authenticity. And, despite my bird-poop, I think dolphin-fillets might be going too far in the "realism" direction.

As for ye barracoes, well, I do have a lathe on the way. And I will need to practice until I get the hang of it. So, they can be on the "Maybe" list, too.

(Do you have a pattern I could use to make a template ??)

And...I believe you informed me about a carpenters clothing chest?

Yeah ...but I'll be passing on that methinks, Matt. Trouble is that I spent two weeks or so working on the first tre-nails I've ever done. I want 'em to be visible as much as possible.

Also, this project has taken more than a year now. It was supposed to be a side-liner to get me into doing my Connie. O'course, that's nobody's fault 'cept my own. But, I really gotta be drawing the line somewhere as regards all the extra detailing.

I will be re-doing the barrels ... I'll consider the "Maybe" list ...

But the time doth draw nearer to be a-winding this build up.

Hey CaptainSteve, I didn't have a template just dimensions: 7inch at ends, 8 1/2inch at bilge, 21inches long. It's about the size of two of the small barrels end-to-end.

I know what you're talking about, I need to have an end game at some point(I've got almost 5 months into this one). There's only a few key items that I need to put into this build. After all I've got like 6 models on the shelf in waiting.

Hey CaptainSteve, you know, once I finished rigging the sails, the end game began. If you get your sails rigged, you'll see you're maybe list become doable. I do still need to make a stand, but yours will be difficult to compare to.
