Le Gros Ventre 1767 by Woodrat - Scale 1: 48 - POF - French exploration vessel

Recommended Posts

I have it in mind to build a 1:48 scale fully framed model of the french gabare Le Gros Ventre. This will be based on
the excellent plans by M. Gerard Delacroix published by ANCRE Press.

This is of particular relevance to me, as a western australian, since this vessel, under the command of
M. St. Allouarn, was part of the Kerguelen expedition of 1772. He in fact laid
claim, in the name of the french
King, to the western australian coast and left a message to this effect in a
bottle at Shark Bay 30th May 1772.
Unfortunately, M. St. Allouarn died at Ile de France 5 months later.
Le Gros Ventre ended its life as a
hulk in 1779. As a start, I present the building board.

Dick
I plan to use only western australian woods for this project.post-848-0-65079400-1361355410_thumb.jpgpost-848-0-25142800-1361355414_thumb.jpgpost-848-0-15727900-1361355418_thumb.jpgpost-848-0-54060300-1361355422_thumb.jpg

I will try to document each step, including the mistakes. The first step is to
make the keel from western australian jarrah hardwood. The stem and stern post
as well as keelson will also use this wood.

Here is more on rebating the "counter-keel" to receive the floors for each
frame. I used the cross slide on my saw to make these. Ensure that the stem and stern frame rebates are lined up on the frame marks on the baseboard. The next job is to make the rabbets.

The stern timbers are made and installed. Please note the is a large entry port on the
larboard side of the stern which was originally for loading of timber and
masting.

As a West Australian, I am hugely interested in this build-both because of the history of the vessel and the WA hardwoods.  I have found Jarrah to be a beautiful wood but a little splintery for fine, detailed work. No problems for you, though. A terrific start.

:) Thanks, Grant. The Jarrah is difficult at times and the dust is irritating. So I always wear a mask when sawing and sanding. Some members may not like the very dark hue the wood takes on when oiled.

Cheers, Dick

Just received this book in today's mail. It's detail follows all of the great books in the Ancre line.

Woodrat

It looks like your off to a great start on this. I shall follow your build with interest as someday maybe I'll start this build also.

Good Luck and enjoy the build. You have great plans to follow. Hopefully you got an English copy. I bought a used English copy however it has two plate 32's and I'm missing plate #31. So if you have an extra plate #31 and need a #32 I'm willing to swap.

Thanks Grant, Guy and 42rocker. The jarrah is working out OK as a framing material. Here is the completed stern section. I am going off air for a while as I make some more frames. A bientot.

Nice work on the tricky part of the framing. You commented that some modelers might not like the color of Jarrah: it only has to please you! I find it quite attractive in the photos. What is the finish you have on it? Looks very shiny.

Thanks, Druxey. Some of the earlier photos are after application of orange oil, hence the shininess which is temporary. The latest photos are raw timber. The timbers around the transom show darkening from the orange oil.

Please note the is a large entry port on the

larboard side of the stern which was originally for loading of timber and

masting.

Hello!

Can you post a picture of the stern with that detail ( a plan) . I´m very interested with that port. Somehow is like you are making the stern weak. I mean not you but the shipwright at that time.

Regards.

Daniel.

Here are the outer hawse pieces in process of installation. This has got to be the most tedious part of the build! I think it will be worth it

I purchased the Warrior practuim for my next build but , have put it on hold as I was drawn to this model of Gros Venture and just recently purchased this book and plans set. I think this ship will be my next build and there is a historical link to Australia with her.

Good choice. the plans are very good. Are you going to go POF or POB?

Dick,

plank on frame with exposed areas Admalty style.  I looked up the meaning of Gros Venture and to my amusement, it means big belly.

Quite an appropriate name for an exploration vessel which needs to carry large amounts of supplies and spare parts for an expedition to the other end of the earth.
