OcCre Bounty with cut-away section

Hi there:

While cruising around on the Cornwall Model Boats site today, I noticed that they've added an OcCre product I'd not seen before - a Bounty with the starboard planking cut away. I recall seeing such a model offered by Artesania Latina (they had one in a local model shop a few years ago). Two questions:

1. Can anyone confirm if the OcCre kit is the same as the AL one? Since they're both Spanish manufacturers, I thought perhaps that OcCre may have purchased or licensed the design from AL.....

2. Has anyone built either the AL or OcCre versions? If so - how would you rate the kit - quality of parts, primarily as well as general comparison with other Bountys available - Mamoli, Caldercraft, Amati in particular....

Thanks in advance!

Hello Hamilton.

As far as I can see in the photos, looks like the OcCre kit is exactly the same as the A Latina. I built the Latina version. I's a nice kit, with few mistakes and in general I have a good impression of the kit. Remains to see if the OcCre kit, being a (probably)  newer version has some improvements over the Latina one.

A Latina kit is single planked. This may pose a bit of difficulty for a beginner. I have no means to compare it with other versions.

If I was going to buy/build this kit again, I would go for the OcCre version. OcCre was founded by ex-members of Artesania Latina, who wanted to make better kits. That has to say something about them. So OcCre (Ocio Creativo) is a newer company formed by experienced kit designers. I own their Santísima Trinidad and it looks a very good kit with excellent drawing and instructions.

Mike.

I just find it strange that OcCre shows the scale of their kit at 1/45, while the A Latina is 1/48. OcCre's specifications say their kit measures 915 mm, while Latina says 38.6 inches which is 980.44 mm. So at 1/45 OcCre's should be larger.

There are some discrepancies somewhere.

Hi again, my kit is certainly quite large and actually very different in construction from Ulises Victoria kit. Mine, unfortunately for me with the planking skills of a turkey (!!!) is double planked as well.

Mike. excuse me, I'm curious. Where do you see the construction of your kit is very different from mine? Every step I've seen in your build so far looks exactly as in mine.

In model ship building, 1/48 is considered a large scale.

Hi there, looking at your pictures I notice a number of differences. Yours has far more formers at the stern and bow ends than mine, the central portion of the internal hull is planked, I can't see a wheelhouse on yours etc. I know the differences are minor. Didn't you say yours was single planked as well?

In case anyone was looking I did give the title to my build out wrong. It should have been Bounty by Mike Dowling

Don't know if that made it difficult to find if so apologies.

The more I look at the AL kit the more differences I see. Unfortunately (because I am building the OcCRe version) the AL kit is far more detailed, below decks anyway. I know the single planking is a hazard for some (particularly me) because you have to get it right first time. If I had realised there was a choice I would have gone for the AL. Too late now I have to do the best I can with what I have.

Thank you for that. I would revise my last post as, to be honest, I wouldn't buy a thing from AL. I have had serious difficulties with them over parts not supplied in a sealed box kit.

A friend of mine has also had big problems with his model. If you can get over the dreadful instructions I would go for the OcCre kit and now, I am glad I did!

And HERE'S my contribution to this topic - my AL cutaway Bounty. Quite a good kit for the price, and mine was "built in Spain" not Asia so it didn't have all the junk cast pieces of more recent AL kits.

I'm guessing that AL took the overall measurement including the Bowsprit, and OcCre used the hull measurement?

They definately aren't the same kit, I can answer that with 100% certainty.

There are quite visible differences. AL has two launches for example, Oc only has one. Oc has a more square sail right above the launches, (sorry I don't know the term), where as AL's sails are triangular.

AL's version: http://www.artesanialatina.net/articulo.aspx?ref=22810&des=bounty-99-con-velas-cosidas

OcCre's version: http://www.occre.com/model-ship/frigate-bounty.html

Both from their own webpages.

Danny thanks for the answer about the oddities with scale/dimensions, I was wondering why the numbers seemed back to front, but that makes sense now.
