EDIT:

How I made em..... After cutting the Red Oak to size on the Byrnes mini-table saw..... WOW!!! That saw can cut down to .001" if you can measure it to set it up!!! I then took the blocks to my HF mini-metal milling machine and stood them up in my precision vice so they were exactly 90 degrees from horizontal, scribed the center point in the end of wood block where the dowel goes using my dial indicator, then very carefully drilled a #14 (.182") hole at that center point about .300" to .400" deep. Not all the way thru!! Then did a flip over and drilled the other end using the edge of the vice as the reference point for the oak block. It didn't matter if each hole depth was different because I inserted the dowel afterwards and marked the finished length on the dowel, removed it from block and cut the dowel using my little hand saw to the length for that hole. Then I put a small dab of yellow glue on the end of the dowel and carefully inserted the dowel into the hole, taking care not to smear any glue on the wood block because I'll be staining the wood later and the glue blocks the stain. :)

Drilling the front Axletrees.  First using a 1/8" for a pilot hole then the #14 drill bit.  To a depth of .400" approx. I put white out

on the bits to show me the depth drilled, since my electronic depth gauge has dead batteries again..... always when I need it, its batteries are dead!!! :(

White out, interesting. Used blue painters tape before and on fixed drill (tail stock) depth drilling used black marker pen. White out, interesting idea, Thanks.

One small step towards cnc-ing my big mill arrived today. A 6" 3-jaw chuck to mount on the Rotary Machining Table that goes on the mill bed for the 4th axis. Next step is to work on the parts for mounting the stepper motors. Then buy motors controls etc. Step by step. I'm following another person or two's cnc work that they have done, so I can cnc my mill which is close to the ones that they did

.

So following your work and enjoying it and looking forward to my own cnc mill setup someday.

Good Luck with your cannon carriages. Luck, I don't really think that you need it as your doing great. They look good.

Al from UA

Thanks for your wish but it's going to be a long while due to cash flow. I'll keep working at the project a little here and a little there. Have lots of plans for the cnc-ed mill, 4 axis setup after it's done but getting the funds is the hard part as you know. Worm screws and bearings for them are not cheap and I've found some of the best prices out there.

I think that your cnc setup is great and I might also try to set up something like that someday also.

Well for my frames I need to get back to using a jigsaw. At least it's a RBI Hawk, ok the RBI Hawk is my wifes (but I did buy it for her), mine is a Black and Decker jigsaw.

Looking forward to seeing how your cross section turns out.

Thanks Tim! I hear you on the cash flow, same boat here! ;)

Thanks Wouter!! I'm giving it my best shot for my first ship build!! Still learning as I build each item.

The front cannon Axletrees are done, next I'll do the wheels and sides on my CNC wood mill!

Good Morning Al,

I am looking forward to seeing the completed carriages for your cannons (which I might add came out very nice). At this size you should be able to incorporate a lot of nice details on your completed cannons.

Thanks Tim!, slowly getting there! Doing the stain on the wheels and some mock-up assembly just to see the over all look. Still need to slot the bottoms of the sides for the axiltrees to sit correctly.  Pinning the wheels just to add some looks to em!

Kept thinking I needed to make a carriage jig to hold the carriage side at the proper angle for drilling holes and mounting the axiltrees..... so I made a simple and workable jig!  Got the first carriage slots made for the axiltrees with it.

This is how the first cannon is looking so far!!  The cannon barrel  is not glued in, just laid in place to check fit. Still need to stain the carriage wood like I did the wheels.

Forgot to make a note of that neat spring clamp in one of the above pics. Wait that was a rubber band or two, nice idea. Keep on programing.

Enjoy the build.

Hello Al,

Just got caught up with your build, fantastic work!  Here I am a certified machinist but your equipment might as well be from another planet to me  ;)  My training dates from 1952!   Never earned a living as machinist though, just used all my training in my business repairing aircraft.

And thanks for visiting my father's submarine build, appreciate you stopping by and liking my work on her.

I'll be visiting your shipyard more often, that new fangled stuff is intriguing to me.  Like to see the continuation of your build.

Cheers,

Piet, The Flying Dutchman.

:piratebo5: Piet........ Thank you!! I thoroughly enjoyed your post of the 019 submarine build, I need to finish reading it all. We share the same addictions it seems, machinery, planes, ships, subs!!  I'm a self taught manual machinist, learned it over the years out of necessity to make a living with it plus I like doing it!!.  Wasn't till about 8 years ago that I started learning the CNC side of things, still teaching myself and learning how to do it..... LOL I guess I like the challenges of it all and the feeling of creating with it as a hobby. But really, its just another tool to use in the shop, just got a few more buttons to push!!  Stop by the shipyard any time for a visit I'll be here making wood chips and saw dust... LOL
