Royal Louis 1780 by Ulises Victoria - FINISHED - Mamoli - Scale 1/90 - French 126-gun ship

Recommended Posts

You bet George. As I said in another post, masting and rigging is my favorite part of ship building. I still have to deal with decks furniture, ladders, deck cannons mounting and rigging, etc.

There aren't but two options: do it FAST, or do it RIGHT.

Looking good Ulises B)

My 1/60 scratchbuild to Mamoli's plans going along in the background only highlights the problems you must have faced getting a fair hull. The bulkheads are miles away and unsymmetrical.Admittedly all errors on the plans are scaled up 1.5 times on my build, but the errors are as much as 3mm on my skeleton.Much packing sanding and checking will be required before I even think about planking.

Kind Regards

WOW! If at 1/90 I thought the hull was humongous, can't even start to think about it at 1/60. Best wishes with your project, Nigel.

Small update. Bulwarks have been planked, filled with plaster, and sanded. (they are formed by 4 layers of wood: 1st planking, 2nd planking, some vertical supports on the inside and finally the last horizontal planks). Here the decks have been masked in preparation for painting.

Update as of Feb 10 2016.

I finished planking and painting the inner bulwarks, and applied a coat of boiled linseed oil.

If you notice a different yellow color in these photos compared to previous ones, then you have a very good eye. :)

During this process I decided to change the "mustard yellow" color I had used for a "ochre yellow" color.

It may not be too apparent in the photos, but in person it makes a huge difference.  I am actually very pleased with the change.

Thanks for visiting. :)

Not me and don't plan to do it. I like my ships to look the same both sides. :)

I plan to leave the gunports randomly open-closed-semiopen-semiclosed. I don't remember who I got this idea from. (Sorry) It was someone's build in this forum, and I really liked the look of it.

Beautiful job Ulises. Man! That's a lot of gun ports! I agree with having both sides look the same. As for open vs closed lids, I personally like to close the bottom ports and open all the others, but that's just my preference.

Nice organized work space mate. So many others would kill for a space like that.

Keep up the good work.

Hello and thanks, Dave.

Are you sure you are talking about my workshop??? :o  I build in a converted blanket closet. There is barely room for a single build. Forget about electric tools.  :(

I wish I had a real room as workshop.

Colorful jig.

This is to make the handrails. Instructions say to place indicated pieces of wood over the drawings, glue and when dry lift off.

Hm... everything seems to be so easy in the instructions LOL.

Like...

...step # 29: Now plank the hull.

...step # 30........

I'll let you know how this goes. This looks like a very delicate job. I am building the hand rails now, but will see later when during the build will install them on the ship.

Best regards to all and thanks for watching. :)

  • 1 month later...

Finally an update!!!

I am finished with the hand rails. It was a long process. Building, adjusting, and painting them took longer than I thought, plus some family matters that made this update a long one. About a month and a half to complete.

I also applied a coat of Boiled Linseed Oil to the decks.

I am now done with Sheet 1, pages 1 and 2 of the instructions. I will move now to deck furniture, ladders, capstans etc, as well as the golden metal adornments.

I love this ship. I like it so very much. It remained in my wish list for so many years until thanks to a drastic discount at Model Expo, I could afford it. :D

I have made a few mistakes and some things are not 100% of my liking, but I am learning so much I am very happy.

Thank you for watching!!!

Testing the hand rail with the cannons to check for correct height and placement.

Hardest part was to adjust the hand rail in a way that no light could be seen between the rail and the bulwark.
