Small update, but more of a question.

Ok so Bowsprit, fore and main masts have been dressed with their respective sails... (so much for the update :) )

1828895489_RoyalLouis(1880).JPG.e47beb8cbcffba10379e529a2cbecdc1.JPG

Now the question:

I am ready to start work on the mizzen mast:

It is my understanding that ships with that large and inclined sail in the mizzen mast, did not carry a sail in the lower yardarm, because it would interfere with the operation of that slanted sail. Am I correct?

Would appreciate an educated answer. Thanks in advance!!!

Thank you Mark. Yes indeed I was checking things directly on the ship and there's no way a sail could have been fixed there. I appreciate your confirmation, and thanks for the appreciative words!!! :)

Best to you!

10 hours ago, marktiedens said:

You are correct - the lower mizzen yard is only used to hold the lower corners of the mizzen topsail.  Very nice job you are doing,by the way!

That's a little simplified, isn't it Mark? As I recall the progression went from full lateen mizzen course, to keeping the lateen boom but stopping the sail at the mast as it would be here, and then the final evolution was straightforward fore-and-aft gaff sails with a boom on the bottom and a gaff up top. At least that's what I recall reading. Can't remember the dates between lateen mizzen and shortened lateen mizzen, maybe 1690-1710 or so? And the final step was fairly late, after 1800 I think.

Follow-up on my previous question:

If there is no sail in the lower mizzen yard, then there is no use for those stunsails booms and irons, correct?

Can (should) I get rid of them?

What about the foot ropes?

I would think the stunsail booms could go. The foot ropes I could see either way. I gues that would depend upon how the sail is rigged to that yard. If the ends just run through blocks and down to the deck, I would see no reason for the foot ropes. If however, the sailors need to go out on that yard to operate, or secure/let go the sail then I would think they would need to be there. My gut feeling is they are not needed.

Update April 30 2019.

Can't be any happier. All sails have been fixed to yards and furled in position.

Now the actual rigging can start with shrouds and stays, etc.

Of course the yards look misaligned :) Nothing is fixed yet!!!

Your sails look awesome! Very inspirational.

Your sailors however, need to put down the rum and do a better job of squaring those yards. This is a 1st rate man of war, not some merchant tub. :)

I know, I know... I have been so slow... When furnishing my new workshop some things didn't quite came out right, and I need the guy who helped me to come back and fix some things, like the height of my main table. Working in the upper rigging has to be done standing up, and I tire very soon. Ok enough excuses.

Mizzen mast standing rigging is finished, including shrouds and ratlines up to the topmast.

I am following strictly the order  laid down in the instructions. Not sure if this is the wisest thing to do, but time will tell...\

Very nice work indeed and slow is often a good thing I have found. :)

To me rigging has always been one of those tasks that since each individual piece takes a lot of time and detail work, every piece that gets completed feels like a major milestone done.

A small update and a "Why-have-I-been-so-slow" excuse.

Hello all. Since August I started feeling a nasty pain in my left thumb that prevented me from doing almost anything with my left hand. Shortly after, I started developing a "trigger finger" condition in my right index.

I tried different alternative options before undergoing surgery, but nothing worked. I wasn't able even to hold my guitar, much less playing it. My chops went downhill terribly. So I decided there was nothing else to do but surgery. I had it on Sept. 17th.

Here the scars barely noticeable now

IMG_0113.JPG.b2afbf5d5705bb9c70b49e84fd4ad474.JPG

IMG_0114.JPG.57994496644e7dd57957a60456f88f25.JPG

I wasn't able to do many things during the recovery time, and my mood went to floor level.

I finally and slowly began working again in my guitar and also in my ship. Here is a small update on my build.

Here is a general view. Shrouds in the mizzen mast are completed, as well as those in the lower main. 5 pairs still to go.

1406191714_RoyalLouis(1904).JPG.af3154428609338c2ef80f871303d164.JPG

Some details of the ongoing rigging. I am following strictly the instructions order. Not sure how wise this ultimately be :)

This were very difficult to make,,,
