Thank you Nick. I have to say... if it looks dusty, is because it is :) This morning I spent cleaning it so next photos will be cleaner... that is... if I take them before it gets dusty again!!!!😂

Hello Guys. I'm Back!

After a long period of no nautical activity, due to several reasons, in part (not necessarily in that order) procrastination, boredom (ratlines... do I need to say more?) health issues (nothing serious thanks God) I have already 5 of my fingers surgically intervened. I had to stop doing things I love and that made me loose the momentum, my guitar playing skills went down and my mood was in general very down. But finally I managed to slap myself in the head and started working on my project again. I am happy to announce that I am finished with the dreaded ratlines, and I am very excited (again) to start the fun part of the rigging of my ship. Here are just a few photos of my ship at its state at this very moment. If you see it dirty and covered in dust, is because it is! :) Also all those loose ropes are awaiting their proper placement. I just want to finish this project. I have to tell you I am not very proud of it. It is full of errors, mistakes and wrong doings, which I am NOT going to tell you about... (and if you find them, please keep it to yourself ;) ) It will look nice in my living room, though...

Thanks for watching, and I'm glad to see you guys again!

Welcome back! Errors and mistakes happen even on the best models. You said the only words that matter on a personal hobby, you are proud of your creation. It is a great model. I have used it for reference for my own RL build many times and I am certain others have as well. Push through and finish then display her proudly!

Hello all. Thanks for the kind words. Here is another update.

First the wrong stuff...

I tried to drill the holes for the bowsprit gammoning and this was the result: ugly holes!

1671418213_RoyalLouis(1920).JPG.2bddb2923effa382bd38c2e041138fcc.JPG

So I made these "plates to cover up the mistake.

And here is the result

I am glad to say that the standing rigging is done!

I followed strictly the steps in the instructions:

So here is some photos of the ship in her present state:

See you next time!!!

Great recovery on the oversized gammoning holes. Those plates appear to be natural parts that should exist there. She is looking fantastic and congratulations on finishing the standing rigging!

Small update:

Mizzen running rigging finished!

A few photos. All those loose scrambled threads on deck will be trimmed in due time. What I do is pass the thread through the belaying pin hole, and then "plug" the pin in the hole. This way is easier to make adjustments later. Just pull the pin out, pull or adjust the thread and plug again.

When I'm satisfied with everything, I apply a minuscule drop of diluted glue to secure things.

Thanks for visiting!!! Cheers!!!

Great idea using the belaying pins as temporary clamps to hols the lines in place. I had not thought to do that but will likely give it a try. That is always one of my fears is securing a line too soon and needing to free it from glue to readjust.

Update April 17 2021

Running rigging of Main Mast finished. Working with the fore mast now.

Here a few general photos of the Main Mast.

By the way... if you have problems with your knots untying, do yourself a favor and go to a music store... yes.... a music store, and get a cake of rosin, the stuff violinists rub their bows with. A few passes of your thread over it and your knots will never undo.

Pros: knots will not untie...

Cons: knots will never untie... once is tightened it is forever...

One more update.

This side of this rigging sheet plan has been completed. Plenty of red marks lol. The other side will deal with bowsprit rigging and of the large diagonal sail in the mizzen mast.

686091057_RoyalLouis(1953).JPG.df70a569135a916fcbd7bdafea161928.JPG

Every little red line here is a step that has been completed. Most of them (those marked with "D") had to be done twice: one per side.

Last update and big mistake

The 19th of this month (May) I tied the very last of the rigging lines according to the instructions:

885002387_RoyalLouis(1955).JPG.33d38bee6555764ad1b0e81bc58a0848.JPG

Rest of these last days have been spent making and placing rope coils in belaying pins, cleats, etc... Also did some cleaning. I know understand why scrubbing the decks was such a hated job among sailors :)  (Still some more cleaning to do...)

Those large nails were used to keep the shape of those coils hanging from the rails...

2115504407_RoyalLouis(1956).JPG.a85f19b2de5df2e37af37a46ee234cac.JPG

The big mistake I refer to above, was leaving the making and placement of the ship in its display base for the last step. This beast is heavy and I am having trouble handling it myself. I am going to have to ask for help!

Here is the (almost) completed ship. This was started in April 2014. A lot of time, but big changes came to my life in this period. Not going to get into that now! :)

I fully agree with you. No need for course sheets and tacks to be hauled taut when furled. I did the same on my Victory.

Outstanding!! I'm very partial to kits by Mamoli. The rigging plans are virtually idiot proof. I have four Mamoli kits waiting in the wings; Bounty, Rattlesnake, Constitution cross section, and a full size Constitution. I found all of these on Ebay for considerably less than full retail. Again, great work. Very well done!

Ulises,

Yes it has been a while indeed - she came out just beautiful - You were always a master with rigging - years ago you helped with my Vasa - Your example Vasa came very Perfect -

So your next build will be the Sovereign - nice choice. I started this same kit last year (a Father's Day gift from my family) So I'm a bit ahead of you this time. I'm making a lot of changes from the "out-of-the-box" kit - Please drop by and take a few looks.

I will follow your new build when you get started.

Te veo luego mi amigo

Michael

Ulises

I have never been a fan of sails on a square rigger model, but your furled sails are giving me second thoughts for the future.  😀     I would probably go with silk span sails as they are closer to scale but yours are very well done!!!

Allan
