HI Bindy..... thanks for your input.... yeah, I'm really liking this method of planking now, planking has always been a hang up for me, but trying this way has opened a whole new "planking world"  :D  . There's a little more prep work and time involved but I think it's worth it.

Hi Frank I found those planking screws really hard on the fingers, now I just use drawing pins as long as the planks are dry, much easier.

Current builds: HMS Victory - Caldercraft 1:72

Completed builds: HMB Endeavour - OcCre 1:54   HMS Supply - Caldercraft 1:64. Fishing boats, Bremen,  Palamos.

Hi Sjors.........  I'm still here  ;) ..... I'll have an update soon ( I hope !! )..... I've been really busy trying to finish up planking the hull, I've got one more band to do p&s, then I'll be finished. I have to do this while I'm still in the planking mood or else  I'll never get finished :D . so hang in there,...... in the famous words of our beloved Gen. D. MacArthur... "I shall return".. I don't know when , but I will :P

This confuses me as well.  I consider length overall as bowsprit tip to spanker boom end.  But then there's the length on deck and the mysterious length between perpendiculars.  Length at the waterline adds still more to ponder.  Measure up the plans, do the math and figure out what size case you need and where you're going to display her.

Have we 'officially' decided that this is the 1818 US Alert?

Hy Augie, sorry for writing in here but it might be a very old but important question - helpful to a plenty of members confused by diffent length(e?)s used to definite a ships proportions.

These diffrent length(e?)s are not too confusing if you look onto this drawing - source wikipedia:

Hth,

Chris

Like I told Sjors last month ,"I will return", well, I'm returning..... with an update that finishes up the laying of the Alert's hull. Still need to sand it up and doctor it up here and there. It was a lot of fun planking the hull this way( spiling). There's some goofs here and there but after all is said and done, I can live with it ... it could have been a lot worse!! :P . The only thing I was a little disappointed with was the basswood. It's not that it's hard to work with,it's ...ah,... just not that good. .... I don't know if there are different grades of Basswood available, but I certainly didn't come across any. Although I shouldn't complain , the price was definitely all right!! Thank God for stains and paints. :D

Well enough complaining  .... following are a few pictures confirming that I really did finish !  All comments  good... bad.... or indecent. are welcome!!

This shows the transfer of the outline of the plank to the basswood . I then used my ships curves to make the final lines.

Hi Frank,

I love those lines mate, she will clean up beautifully and you may even get away with a single planking.

All the plaudits are well deserved mate, you've earned them.

A small update..... My first ( and I hope my last)  Alert repair!!...... I was just starting to set the last 2 strakes

and when I started the star-bord side I ran into a little problem.  while trying to fair the bottom plank I took off to much on the top of the plank, so when trying to fit the one on top of it it just wouldn't sit right, so I decide to yank that plank out and start from scratch, because I know that would have really bugged me, but as  things go, while removing that one I screwed up the one beneath it ( and I thought I was so careful) :o well what

was supposed to be a band aid treatment became  minor surgery. For fear of screwing up any more planks I soaked that one real good with alcohol . As you can see in the last picture the procedure was  a success !!

Now all I have to do is get it back together again. I'm so glad this is scale planking!! :P :P

Frank

This is the first plank removed, as you can see the next plank had a piece chipped right near the stem, Thats what prompted me to remove that one also

post-73-0-46868600-1411773103_thumb.jpg

This is where I carefully soaked and started to remove the second plank

post-73-0-55529300-1411773197_thumb.jpg

Operation finished!!! Like I said before , I'm glad these are scale planks!!!

Frank,

Let's be glad these are scale planks and that a bit of alcohol (on the planks and sometimes in the builder) help immensely.  Nicely done on removing the offending planks.  ;)

As for the "last repair"... hmmm... I always thought that's we did.. non-stop repair?  :o

Thanks Mark........ Just finished cutting one of the new planks, I'm taking a breather to-nite so tomorrow I'll fit it in . i guess you're right, we're always repairing when we build :P

Hi Mike....... it's always frustrating when something goes wrong, but it's better to fix it now and be satisfied, that would have been a real obvious goof!!
