18th Century Longboat by Nirvana - FINISHED - Model Shipways - 1:48

Recommended Posts

Still using my phone for documentation.

The stem platform is re-done and I am much happier with the outcome than the first one. I would recommend everyone to add support underneath to avoid breakage.

Risers in place and moving forward.

Took the following two pictures outside, at the temp of 95°F /  35°C and rising.

Copied the frames and printed in order to get front face to frame #7, applied to 1/32" boxwood sheet, cut out and sanded.

Having a nice and tight fit over the keel, sits a little to much over the risers only light sanding and glue into place.

Pictures reveal to much, I had the pictures resized and found several  with part flaws during the editing.

But here is the pictures.

How Chuck did this is a mystery to me...... :)

  • 4 weeks later...

I am about to do the thwarts, but am confused as the material list and instructions mentioning 1/8" while the plans measure them at 6/32" and the mast thwart is mentioned at 3/16" while plan measure 1/4". Should I go with the size from the plans and order new strips? Anyone with same problem? The scale on plan has been triple checked both by me and Admiral and coming up with same measurements.

There must be an error somewhere and it's not from my side.

I have checked again and again regarding the measurements from plans vs. instructions vs. material.

The plans are correct as I have checked them with analog and digital caliper. Nothing wrong there.

But instructions says the thwarts are made from 1/8" x 1/32".

It should read 5/32" x 1/32", just like my plans are showing. I was wrong in previous posting.

Material from MS and from Jeff (HobbyMill) both measure to these dimensions.

The wide thwart for the mast is at 1/4".

Progress can now be resumed.

Model Shipways didnt have the fractional size strip available and so it was decided to go with the 1/8" wide strips.  I mentioned this a few times in other logs.  BUT yes the plans are correct in every respect...always follow the plans...

When I designed the kit I actually used 5/32" wide strips for thwarts.  It matched the plans.   But just as MS swapped out the hull planking for a different size recently they did the same with the the thwart material because they dont have 5/32" wide strips anymore.   This was done a while ago but they actually had the thought to change my dimensions in the instructions.  Something they forgot to do with the recent change for the hull planking.  My guess is that as time goes by more changes will be made on the MFG side without addressing the model ramifications.....yes it can get confusing..but always follow the plans.  It is something that they cant change too easily.

Per, I encountered the "problem" with my kit. I searched around in my stash of wood leftover from previous kits until I found some that matched Chuck's plans and ignored MS' instructions.  Worked fine for me once I found the right wood.

I am back to building, in the instructions Chuck is recommending to scribe to thwarts in one run.
After little experimenting I found a way to scribe a 24" strip.

The following two pictures explains it a lot.

I used a L-shaped aluminium profile this to make sure of a straight line.

The 5/32" strip was press-clamped in several places to ensure the straightness.

I added on with a 1/8" strip which was clamped down.

First trial of a twart.

I have more than enough material for thwarts so this will be not an issue.

But comparing to the pictures of Chucks I have so much more fuzziness on the material even with the boxwood.

Something I don't like.

Thwarts are coming into place, none of them are glued.

The thwart at frame A is a tricky one, but I got it in place without breaking the thin side that goes around the frame.

Most thwarts in place, only two unglued and the one between G and H missing.

Slowly progress but I enjoy all the trimming that comes along with each part.

post-967-0-21276300-1442538125_thumb.jpgThe cockpit is under construction.

Again I am using boxwood instead of the provided material from the kit.

The seats are wider, as per instructions from Chuck and will be slightly trimmed.

Using the locker part as guide I have an idea how much to trim.

Gee, photos are more revealing than you think.... :(

As for the photos I am using a 5 year old 8mb pixel Panasonic Lumix camera.

No macro lense is being used.

No photoshop or editing has been taking place either.

I feel that the details of mine should be better.
