sloop of war by yamsterman - 1:48 - (model boats circa 1996) - Finished

this will be my first scratchbuilt project.based on a set of plans first published around an article in modelboats cica 1996 by a chap called peter danks. (myrmidon man?)

apparently this vessel was originally built for service on the great lakes of north america during the america war of independance.

built around ply wood bulkheads on a similar system to some of the billing kits ie in two halves.

wales planked using 3mm x 4mm beech.

all other  planking in lime wood.

various fittings will be in a mixture of other timbers including boxwood,ramin.

found some more pictures of current build.should bring things up to date. almost ready to start rigging.will be using chuck passaros blocks and rope.

 

already used some of chucks cannon barrels on scratch built carriages.absolutely superb qaulity turnings.

 

will also be using chucks lantern kit as a final stern embellishment.

 

postman brought my latest kit this morning,direct from model expo in florida . rn pinnace based on chucks prototype. should be an interesting build.

 

also have just subscribed to deagostini for their hms surprise kit.this will form the basis of a heavily modified kit build.some of the components are crude to say the least. i was intending to build this as the refitted ship circa 1798? hence the purchase of the original draft from the nmm.wont be starting this for another 12 months or so, lots of planning to do first.

Thanks for looking at my first scratch build.as to the history of the ship Mr ranks did not go into great detail other than to say it was classed as a sloop and was built,I presume in north americafrom local timbers,for use on the great lakes.its quite a small vessel even for a sloop.further enquirys to the national maritime museum,where the original drafts were supposed to have come from yielded no further information.so I have to take it as said that the information supplied on the plans is correct.perhaps some of the guys an gals based in the us can throw some more light on the subject.?

I have a list of ships operated by the Provincial Marine, on Lake Ontario during the period. I'm not sure what operated on the upper lakes at that time.

She carry's 6 guns,but there's only four on at the moment,6lbs I think plus the swivel guns all courtesy of syren ship models.she looks more like some kind of hybrid schooner than a true sloop but I'm not entirely sure.I will bow to superior knowledge.

The color scheme is atypical rn.too early to be coppered so white hull.also hides the planking which I wasn't happy with.we live and learn! Black seems to be predominant for whales and bulwark cappings. Red ochre for inboard and bits etc. The blue may be a bit of a liberty as blue pigments were very expensive at this point in time. Everything else is varnished wood......bright work.

Will post some more photos as the rigging progresses.

Coppering was not done on boats built for the lakes, it wasn't needed. And given that the average life expectancy of a lakes boat was 7 to 10 years, not worth the expense.

 

As for the list I have of sloops/cutters on Lake Ontario, 6 guns is a bit of an odd number....

 

Missisauga, Sloop, 8 guns, 1759 (May not have survived until the war)

 

Charity, Sloop or Schooner, 1770 (6 swivels)

 

Caldwell, Sloop, 2 guns, 1777, (6 swivels)

 

Mowhawk, Cutter, 18 guns, unknown build date, civilian requisition?

I've seen other sources with slightly conflicting information as far as build dates go.

 

These ships, in fact all vessels on the lakes also had a large roll in moving goods around the lakes, and during the revolution, refugees. Most would have been probably designed a bit more like heavily armed merchant vessels.

 

If it wasn't for the number of guns, I'd say yours could be the Caldwell. Contemporary paintings (in the same book as mentioned above) show a raised poop deck.

Reading thru the article again the original source was The sailing navy list by David Lyon. The fraught was originally purchased from the nmm and notes on the fraught suggested that two such ships MAY have been built.no names for vessels were given. He also quotes the armament as 6 four pound cannon and up to 10 swivel guns. I have previously contacted the nmm with regards to this fraught quoting all this relavent info but they were unable to locate the fraught. I even contacted peter dank on the model boats forum but he was unable to provide any further info. So the model is treated as somewhat speculative. But an interesting exercise for a first scratch build...and not too complicated.many thanks for your research on my behalf.

I think the next scratch build will be the colonial schooner Hannah in 1\48 . my first go at proper framing.....plus model expos pinnacle...jean boudroits l'jacinthe......jean boudroits. LA belle....and the a seriously reworked HMS surprise in 1/48 by artesania. That's the plan anyway.

been busy over the last couple of days.unfortunately its back to four nights of work.boo hoo!

almost ready to start rigging.forgot to make the pawl bit for the windlass but will get round to that next time im off.

had my recent delivery from chuck passaro,beautiful pear wood blocks plus some more rope.

once the riggings complete theres a lantern for the transom,another of chucks offerings and then finally the swivel guns.

Well done and well made.  I admire your craftsmanship considering what you had to work with.  I am afraid your model fell into the camp of a list by Rob Napier from many years ago.  It is model that shall not be made.  Not enough documentation first account info or data and incomplete plans.  Who cares.  I look foraward to your Hannah.  There is a ton of info and several commplete plans.  It will depend on how you wish to tackle her.

I also have a copy of the colonial schooner which gives a great deal of information. Do you recommend any other sources/info? I was intend ending to use pear for the main timbers with boxwood for details and perhaps some stained pear for whales / bulwark cappings etc.

I also have one or two of jean boudroits publications for future models le Cerf,LA belle and let Jacinthe. I have also invested in seawatch books swan class practicum and HMS euryalus...but these are future projects after I've had a go at some proper framing. I will post some more photos once the rigging commences.

As first scratch built ship model I deliberately chose something smallish and relatively simple. There are some mistakes esp with the planking below the whale. I think I carried the garboard strake to far up the stem rabbet.....but we live and learn(hopefully!) Thanks for your interest and kind words.

My advice would be to contact the Smithsonion Institute Transportation Dept.  I belive they have the plans for the Hannah as well.

As for the choice of wood that is your choice to make.

Nice work.  You might consider putting the pictures of your finished ships into the gallery area.

 

As for POF building, if you need to get your feet wet, have a look at the Triton cross-section.  It's a very good starter project and there's plenty of help if  you have questions.

Hannah was my first attempt at scratch building and I think it is a good choice.  It is a small ship and there are no carvings or friezes.  But if you are looking to build an exact copy of Hannah...choose another ship.  This subject has been addressed in the various logs for Hannah but basically these plans are representative of what Hannah may have looked like.  There are no as-built plans.  If it matters to you, there is no below-decks detail.

i will more than likely order the plans from chris hahn in the next couple of weeks,those along with my copy of the colonial schooner should provide enough information for a reasonably accurate build.Again its more about choosing a fairly straightforward subject in order to initiate me into the world of building frames.......the dark side cometh!!

i am going to download the first part of hms triton and use that build as a test piece also as well as getting on with the rigging for the sloop. busy busy!!

after browsing some of the truly magnificent work on this forum i have a lot to learn , but its gonna be fun gettin there.

hi all

managed to get some more work done on the sloop today.

yards temporarily rigged to mast with parrels.

spreading yard requires a truss i believe,get round to that when rigging proper starts.

pear wood blocks done for cathead.

decided to make a binnacle for the deck. lifted the general shape and proportion from ron macarthys book on scratch building a two masted sloop of 1752.

built from a ramin core and then skinned with 0.6mm box veneer,top from 1mm box and panel details from 0.6mm box veneer.

details ; copper pipe for lantern chimney and amati brass pins for handles.

 

tomorrows job is rigging the gun tacles and breeching ropes.

I don't know about the energy pills,too much black coffee I think,I'm so far behind with this build! Got the triton cross section to be getting on with as well.so many projects too do!!!!
