Pops....please don't do that to me. After building a fleet of ships, this will be the first hull I've put paint over.....can't count the copper plating on a few of them.

As an old furniture builder, I do love wood grain. Hundreds of high end custom poker tables (my former business)....never painted one..... http://www.regalpokertables.com/

WOW is the word of the day,the look and color of the bamboo is outstanding,as is the rest of  your workmanship, maybe a little walk in the mornings will slow you down a tad,if you need to, a time to refleck on your work and smell the roses,I have to get the Admirals meds in the am at Walmart,bamboo you say,a tray no less,will try to keep in touch .Edwin

Dave, great avatar--it's wicked!  I'm with Russ and Pete on going with the true waterline.  Sometimes I think the right application of paint can really set off the natural beauty of the surrounding wood.  Some of the minimal paint jobs I've seen here on the forum really capture this blend well.  Like Nigel, I really enjoyed looking at your blog builds--some very nice work, sir!

Hi Dave. I too share your initial thoughts about painting the hull, particularly as you've never done it on your earlier models. But, once it's done, you'll probably look at it and say 'what was all the fuss about"! It's a great job you're doing there and the fact that you're doing two Mayflower's is even more impressive.

very nice planking Dave....you really hit onto something with the bamboo. I like that close-up shot....has some very defined wood grain. does the mayflower waterline go all the way to the wales? my Half Moon is a similar ship...I have mine too low. when I get back to her, I will have to adjust it. I also had a bit of problem with the paint creeping under the tape. what a bother!

Frank, Omega, Popeye, Michael...Always great hearing from you guys.

Waterline.....Chuck's kit has the water line right up to the wale. In fact, he takes it all the way to the stern. I think my wales may have slightly more upward sweep at the stern than his.

Paint creeping under the tape....we've all been there. I use a blade to trim the edge of my masking tape....sealing a sharp edge.

 

Painted first coat last night so it would dry thoroughly overnight. This coat was primarily applied and used to get good light reflection across the surface and identify flaws that needed to be smoothed out.

Completely re-sanded the entire area this morning, eliminating all surface flaws, and applied another "first coat".

Fired up the lawn mower and woke up the neighborhood.

The three color geometric pattern on these two panels are one of the biggest challenges I will face with this build. Pretty intensive brush work to say the least.

So, after many hours, I got this close to having it completed and decided it was just not right.

Bottom rows not so bad....The upper rows will require more precision.

 

Only another modeler can appreciate the feeling we get in our gut at this point.

Another major do-over.

Must admit, this is getting to be a little embarrassing. Seems like this stuff used to come a lot easier....or have my quality standards changed after watching some of your masterful builds?

Just another re-work in the park.........

Spent the last week with brush in hand....9X magnifiers on....nose almost touching the table.

But now I'm pretty satisfied that I did. 

I used a different technique and, as a result, the pattern shapes are much more precise. 

These individual rows of painted triangular shaped will be glued to a large blank panel. 

Looking forward to getting back to the shop tomorrow morning.

Dave, the second go look much better--very nice work! Do-overs often are a bummer but they're worth doing when we are happy with the revision--you nailed it with the your 2nd go.

Brush and magnifier, stoned and frozen without breath ... only light moves of top of two fingers ... maybe some soft music in background with forgoten beer/coffee and smokeing cigarette... I can imagine scene ... been there doing that ... my daughter entered and told me that I look as mad chemist ...

 

Who cares, in that moments nothing exist except model, and that moments we remember well later, pafticary if we succed in idea how we want those pair of square milimeters to look

 

I think nothing can compare with that feeeling

Tuesday night poker club....a little strange. One of our players caught "quads" (4 of a kind) twice within an hour. I happened to be holding a lovely Full House on the last one....cost me a bundle of chips.

So after the game broke up, I managed to put another coda of white on her hull.....the 5th.

Also did a few touch-up spots on some of the yellow .... The yellow has required several coats because I cannot use un-diluted acrylic and the area of each shape is too small to sand.

 

If all goes well, should be able to see her with her stern colors by late tomorrow.

Nenad....after attempting to sand the triangles, using various techniques, I had to give up on the notion. Concluded, since the un-smooth surface is only noticeable under magnification, I will just have to live with it.

A hard fact, but a fact nonetheless. :>}
