Great work!!! super nice model. Your sails look great.  I sewed several sails for my Cutty Sark (some were sown by me, some by a vendor with a CNC sewing machine based on kit supplied measurements) so I know what you're going through.  very nice work.

The hammocks (bed rolls) are stowed vertically in the crane and nets as you show in your photo.  The will line all of the cranes and nets.  sometimes open for airing out as you have them, other times with canvas covering the entire cranes to protect from rain.

best

marc

I may cover one side to indicate what you say, I have a question for  you, the centre storage racks for the beds are taller than the front and rear, are these packed smaller or lay down. or do they protrude above the racks

Thanks for any help Marc.

Hi,

Wasn't aware of the difference in crane heights on the Victory, but I haven't started the build yet.  Not sure why the difference.  I have seen the hammocks folded in the shape of a "U" in the cranes, but I'm not sure of the accuracy; however, that would address how the hammocks were stored in the shorter cranes.   I can't imagine that they would allow the hammocks to protrude much on an actual ship, since they would need to be covered to protect the hammocks from spray and rain (no one likes a wet bed 😊)

best,

Marc

Well I have been adding bits and removing them, studying books and pics and then re adding them and realise there are extra blocks needed in hard to reach areas that the Constructo gang  ommited when making this kit. (I often wonder if they have actually seen the ship they modelled) Some of my lines fitted are to be replaced for thicker thread, I have to put up with a lean on the upper mast due to sails unsupported weight this is because I have to ommit the back stay fitting/tension (well all stays are loose fitted) whilst they grant me access to the inner rigging areas, it's a juggle, and an unknown for me, as it is for all first timers.

Finally finished canon port hole framing, I have also done a dry instal of the canons and some of the backplates didnt line up, despite being prefabricated. I had to make sections small enough to fit the canon holes, pre drill them and instal, this works but really should be unnecessary. you can see them in the images. Anyone building this kit i would recommend adding to the depth of the cannon mount board before planking as its a pain to sort through a port holepost-11858-0-64007200-1407591014_thumb.jpg

Paul, when you suggest adding to the depth of the cannon board, which side of the boards would you add to, inboard / outboard - want to include on my Vic before I add the Fibre optic lights.  Thanks in advance

Wow this is a memory stirrer, offer the plan upto the ship before you plank and you will find some canon portholes are lined up with the frames, I had to carve out the frames through the holes that collided in this way. I don't see the Construct changing from kit to kit so they must all do this. Maybe route through other builds and see if it's common place issue. I had to move the Canon holes slightly on the deck where they are seen from behind, they can not afford to collide with these ribs as they are visable. The image was my positions, shocked I still have this after so many years.

Thanks Paul, you're a star.  Whilst routing my fibre optic lighting, I am jumping ahead a little before planking and designing how I will construct the stern gallery - thinking of scratch building this as I don't like the Constructo look, need to do this as I also want to encorporte the stern lighting before everything is sealed up.  will post some photos on build log when I've resolved how to go about it.

I have been adding more detail to the bowsprit, this means more blocks ordered for the tensioning of the lines not detailed by the kit. This means I am short, the kit just instructs we  tie them off on pins. Being short of blocks is normal with the kit if we are to rig her anywhere near the real ship, not to mention those that just jump off the tweezers, never to be seen again. 62E82FCB-AE2D-4774-8147-F7A5400619AA.thumb.jpeg.49dc94c1f6c7f17f81d3f3d59c7517f7.jpegOnly the one tensioner added as my blocks have now run out1607947A-0741-45AF-92FB-253662413B3E.thumb.jpeg.0cbe0691d7367281e1717aee498d5a50.jpegMore rigging A7556BE6-62F4-4CB7-9D67-5B58DDBC9930.thumb.jpeg.8e6258443c8331470ff197cd27d7f6b4.jpegF3DCB6D6-3856-491A-B578-8508B12A18FE.thumb.jpeg.e35a9a780a73d92f86f63293a25e9b96.jpegAB4791A3-4730-4F18-BAD6-E799E32C5159.thumb.jpeg.1b102bb4426cda49ada4e9f4e26e172c.jpeg

Oh I’ve just realised, I have officially passed my fifth year of this build. The real ship only took six. That said in my defence I take months off for life’s adventures and let’s be honest  interest/will to venture into the build room wains and wonders from time to time. Thank you all of you that have got me this far, not only with direct help but images and chats you post on MSW. I look in awe at ship you guys create on here. Oh and thank you to the MSW guys that run this site.

Wow its been a while since I've been on this site, or even touched the ship, not since April have I picked up tools. We lost a close family member and the ship gave me great memories of her and I've found it difficult to venture in the model room let alone pick up the victory build again. As always leaving for long periods makes the restart difficult, remembering what to do, when, where and whats next. I have started on the lower ratlines and the mast supports (really needed too after sails have been fitted). There weight shows without the lines for support. Well in April 2020 she will be in her 6th year of construction, how long the real ship took. Without many breaks of course.

Hi all out there cutting, chopping and glueing. I would love to say I’ve been doing the same but, I haven’t, for over 12 months she just sits there docked, longer than the ship she’s modelled from. Well I managed to get COVID 19 on 28th sept and believe me it’s not a game, I was ok for three days and managed to do some lower ratlines before realising I needed the stowed bedding behind before I block them off. The illness set in and once again I’ve stopped but I have gained some momentum to restart her soon

Wow how time flies, I never have picked her up again, she still sits there awaiting the restart. I cannot believe I posted that so long ago, I still do models of different types, although many have been livery changes on my bosses trains. Ok not ships on a ship site but we’re all modellers ain’t we. The ship will be picked up as the winter/fall moves closer in the uk. Sorry I diverse a lot from ships here. I hope all the modellers have got through the bad times we’ve all hadB22924F9-24FB-4E8D-AF60-7FE00FB52C1F.thumb.jpeg.c64fb7a0863dfde6676a1d1a8ccea042.jpegC512D800-AAFE-4F3E-92E0-437F65EC4B4F.thumb.jpeg.21f20350e00072c3974eb75daa96456b.jpeg

Popped back, I am doing the ship but it’s a slow one, I’m doing the dead eyes and rat lines of the lower mast and as your aware there are many, even if I do one or two an evening it’s progress and it time this ship was finished. Always really difficult picking up where it was left

I’m back, well the bug to wrap this job up has finally arrived and despite looking like little has been done since my last ship post, I’ve done quite a bit of the time eating stuff. Shrouds and there many fixings required, ahhh!  but there  moving on, I have left enough area to get the horizontal climbers in, I hope. Blue tack is slowly coming off. The ship has an age look now and it’s not even finished, copper looks a lot better too as the ageing process kicks in, we’ll she’s is getting old now.

Still working on the shrouds, fortunately the access with the spars and sails affixed is ok, I’ve to tidy the positions / gapping and then tie off the ends. The type of knot required for these messes with the head, just starting them is a pain but once the first is done there ok to replicate, all knots have to be carried out with a pair of long tweezers, as I’m sure yours do, or maybe not with spars out of the way. Well I’m moving in the right direction now.

I surmise that they are that way when installed.  Yet with constant use, they might 'sag' (stretch) just a little.  Wet line stretches more easily under stress (usage).  We've often demoed Colonial crafts under a period-looking canvas top (with a ridge pole), held up by wooden verticals at the corners (and ridge) that we secured with rope going out to iron pegs driven into the ground.

The guy ropes went under the bent top ends of the metal stakes, then up a distance where I tied (and still do) a taut line hitch (an old boy Scout skill).  Everything is adjusted to be square and taut, but on returning for day two of a weekend event - all the lines go slack a little being all wet with dew (this 'droops' the canvas some).  So the first job is to pull-up on the taut line hitch so the tentage is again stretched.

As the day progresses (unless it is a rainy day) the canvas and lines dry out and are subject to shrinkage.  (Yeah, 'shrinkage' ... "I was in the pool ! - remember the Seinfeld show ?)  Anyway, this puts a lot of stress on the tentage and can even pull out some of the stakes if I don't go around and let out the excess tension by slipping the taut line hitches a little.

This I surmise that ratlines would vary naturally to be anything between straight across and hanging a little slack, depending on the weather and the amount of usage - which on an active ship would be a lot.

Completed builds:  Khufu Solar Barge - 1:72 Woody Joe

Current project(s): Gorch Fock restoration 1:100, Billing Wasa (bust) - 1:100 Billings, Great Harry (bust) 1:88 ex. Sergal 1:65

Wow what an incredible insight you just shared. I like the sag look but my thread is, let’s say smooth almost waxed but not, hard to explain but very easily undone if an error is made. Other threads I’ve used grip when knotted this well doesn’t, so trying to created the sag made the previous knot come loose. I have glue tacked them now and will live with it, if I ever venture into another ship build I will learn from this one, just watching ship wrecks and these super straight lines pop up. I think I can get away with it on my first ever ship build attempt.

Its all part of Kev's journey, bit like going to the dark side, but with the lights on
