HMY Royal Caroline by maggsl_01 - FINISHED - Panart - 1:47

Hi Schnu--I think I can answer your question.  Up until the mid 17th century big ships did not use the wheel mechanism for steering--it didn't become common until the later part of the 17th century.  Before the wheel, ships used something called a "whipstaff" which was basically an extension to the tiller on a big ship.  This link describes it better than I can:

Hope this helps.

Hello Max,

When you checked in on my log you made me curious about what you were building.  I'm happy that I looked at your log because I think you are doing a beautiful job on the Caroline.  I'm sure that a friend of mine, Shipyard Sid, who has just finished building the HMS Victory will be interested in your log, also, since he just purchased the Caroline kit.  Keep up the great work.

Best,

Jerry

Hello my friends

just a little update from the past few days. I just build up the deck furniture (?) like the different bits, chimney, gratings, stairs etc...

Now as I learned a method to "carve" the bollards I am quite satisfied with the result. I use a triangle file :D and not longer a knife. I am sure you guys just laugh about my "discovery" - but I found out this by myself... almost a little bit proud *blush* :D :D

The last three pics are somehow experimental as I love to play with photos/photography. Perhaps they look a bit strange... hope you dont mind :)

I am on tour with my Caroline for almost five months now (approx 250 hrs minimum)

Cheerio, cu - and as always: Comments are welcome as I want to get better...

Max

Hi David...

Yes I enjoy this build very much. Although there are some little traps on the way - as probably with every kit - things go good and very nice.

I look forward to watch your log asap :D

Nice work and yes a triangular file is just what you need for bollards!  Now if I could only figure out how to get each side even!

The ship is looking good and I like your experimental shots--they give a nice different view of the work.

To all my friends an fellow followers :D

I am away for some days, a week, as I go to the Austrian Alps to a mountain hut... Just me and my Little dog called Mila. We will be there, hiking, relaxing, no Internet, no TV, no Computer. I will take along James Cooks Logbooks, an Atlas with sea maps... and a handful of dreams.

Hello my friends,

I am back again. I had a wonderful Relaxing time with my Mila in the Austrian Alps (Pic 2). Perfect weather conditions, time for hiking, sitting on the balcony and watch the mountains, just doing nothing but enjoy (Pic 1) .... But this time has gone now, and my shipyards waiting for me. So I will continue with my Royal Caroline the next days. Still have to manage the gun rigging.

So best wishes to all of you

CU soon

Welcome home Max...The picture is so inviting and I'm glad that you had wonderful weather. So now I'm anxious to watch your progress in your shipyard as you work on your Caroline.  I am in the process of gathering the components for displaying my build,  a table and an acrylic display case, as I have little more to do to finish my HMS Victory.  I invite you to visit my web site when you can. In the meantime i hope you have very good luck with your build.  Best,

Hello my friends and fellow followers :D

Well, the fun with my Caroline goes on. After my Holidays with my dog I did continue to build up the deck furniture and to prepare eg the cannons and anchors. But at the Moment I have to wait for additional parts like double-blocks for the cannon rigging, for some Wood as I want to create my own chain-wales. I ordered the parts but they are not delivered. But I expect to get them today. The cannons come out quite good, I did burnish the brass muzzles.

Next will be to seal the decks with a semi-gloss colorless lacquer before I install the cannons and do the cannon rigging.

It is so nice and satisfying to build this kit...

Have a nice time

Best wished ... and: Cheerio

Hello my friends,

it is time for a very small update. I am doing the cannon rigging at the Moment - and well: It is a fiddly fumbling. Nevertheless I am sure I will get along with it. The instructions provided with teh kit do not Show the rigging and so I went along in the Forums an found quite a lot of helpful advices. I will try to turn them into reality. I attached some pice to Show you my first attempts. I hope the results can be called ok although I know that the results are not as good as many others  I saw. But I am still learning :) There are no coils there, I will do them at the end. So please dont be too critical with my guns :), but help me with some hints to make it better.

The last pics Show the anchors - first with a mistake I made - thank you AVBiker for your mail - an my repair of the mishap.

@schnu The breed is called Segugiuo Italiano - hunting Dogs from Italy for rabbits. But I am not a hunter and my Little Girl Comes from the animal welfare.

Yes she is a Beauty - and her nature is as beautiful as her Body.

Thanks for your Attention

Cheerio - and a happy weekend

Hi my friends...

today "something completely different" (although I am neither Monty nor Python) :)

I bought two figures for my RC - perhaps you know them well, they are from Amati, 35 mm, fitting quite good for the 1/47 scale. Its a officer and a master (?), the offiver with a proper uniform and a hat, the other one with some kind of pants and shirt. Does anyone know where I can find a correct color pattern for the figures? You know the time is about 1750...

Thx for your help

Cheerio

Hi all my mates and friends :D

Ist time for a update. I did the cannon rigging completely, but I think I will have to redo some of them guns. I am not satisfied with all rigging so perhaps two or three ropes well be renewed. But all in all I say - for the first time with no instructions within the instruction sheet in the kit it Looks quite good. Thew next time I have some expierence and can avoid mistakes that happend now.

Next will be to install the stairs to the foredeck, the pumps and to cover the hull with semi-gloss lacquer. With my first build, the Half Moon, I use ordinary stuff from the DIY-market and was very very satisfied. So I will not Change the procedure for the Caroline. This I will do agftere the Weekend ( I will spend my weekend with my father in Switzerland).

CU all - and as always: Comments are welcome.

Thx to all for all the fantastic "likes" I get :D :D :D

Greetings Max

Well this is looking really smart, and you are making excellent progress. I have started my build of the RC and reached the planking stage, so will start my log soon. There are some cracking builds of the RC going on, so I should never be short of help when needed. Keep enjoying your build Max and post lots of photos. Best regards. DAVID

Hi all...

thx my friends for your likes and your kind comments. Indeed I myself am quite pleased with the result so far. Today I have re-done some of the guns rigging as I was not satisfied with it - it was for three cannons. Now they all look quite good. I am grateful for all the hints I found on MSW forums to create a correct rigging as Panart does not provide a rigging plan for the cannons. But I had to do it as in a scale of 1:47 there HAS TO BE a rinning. Now that I am ready I think I should have used 2mm-blocks instead of 3mm (as I did). But there are no 2mm-double-hole-blocks. Its a compromise, but I think it is ok.

Now the next steps are the rest of all the decks furniture as stairways, belaying pin-boards etc. Then I will try to find a way to fit the chainplates and teh dead-eyes. When this all is finished I will cover the entire hull and deck with semigloss lacquer.

Then I have to build the boat, and after this the work with masts, yards and rigging will start.

CU soon, pics will follow when I have done the chainplates

Cheerio mates and friends and modellers :D

today it is time for a update with some pics. At least I have finished the hull right now. I have to spray some colorless semigloss varnish onto the surface, but this is a work to be done soon. You will probably miss the anchors and the lamps - but both are to be installed to the very end of the build - before the flags :)

The boat and the masts are now to be done.

I started this log almost six month ago - and I really spent a lot of time in my shipyard (you can ask the Admiral :)). But there was not one single minute of boredom around. I love the ship and I love to improve my techniques and to increase my expierence.

So please enjoy the pics and dont hesitate to comment what you see.
