Niagara by patrickmil - FINISHED - Model Shipways - 1/64th

Recommended Posts

Gentlemen, thanks for the comments and advice! I think it's settled now... I will start over on my rigging from the beginning. Now I just need to figure out how far into the past I want to go. I'll get restarted on this as soon as I finish up some full size wood projects. Thanks again to all who are looking in.

Thanks,

Patrick

Hi Patrick, I've been admiring your log. The Niagra will be my next build after I finish my CW Morgan. I just toured the Museum in Erie, Pa. which made my decision for me. I'll be following your build so I can learn the ropes of building this one. Thanks for the pictures.

Hey John,

Thanks for stopping in and having a look. I've been admiring some of the pictures you have taken on your museum trips. So let me thank you as well for the pictures. Unfortunately, this build is going to be moving in a backwards direction as I think that I will be rerigging almost all of it. I've made up my mind that I'd like to include the shot racks and I'd like to rework almost every rope on her. Talk about your major learning experiences... screwing up on rigging really makes you remember mistakes! As soon as the weather turns too cold to be out in the garage playing with my big wood-working tools I'll be inside starting the tear down.

Thanks,

Patrick

Hi Patrick, you're welcome for the pictures. sorry to hear about the rerigging episode....mistakes can really eat on you, even though 98% of whoever looks at it wouldn't know the difference....we still do. Someone recently posted to remember the Captain is always right, and if the Captain ain't happy then no one is, so ya gotta do what ya gotta do. Good luck with it and I'm sure somewhere I'll have questions where your pictures of the real thing will be required.

Hey Aldo, thanks for stopping by. My finger is fully healed and has been of great use in my makeshift woodshop (read as garage). When the weather turns cold in Ohio I will be heading in and restarting on the rigging.

Thanks,

Ahoy Patrick :D

If I have learned anything here @ MSW, it is that in the end, it is really just about having fun. If doing it right sometimes means doing it more then once so be it.

I salute your commitment and look forward to this addition in your log. Hopefully these posts and your experience will become a great source of help and inspiration for others, myself included.

Good luck on this leg of your journey

Sorry about the waiting Popeye. I have to get all the work in my garage done while the weather is warm enough to do so.

JP, I haven't seen you for a bit. Have you put your build on a hiatus as well?

Thanks,

Scott, thanks for the nice comments. I have periodically been checking in on MSW to see progress but haven't had much interaction. I was getting tired of tying thousands of tiny knots. LOL. That is all about to change though. I took a hiatus to work on some plastic models that have been gathering dust and have become reinvigorated to finish up my Niagara. I dug all of my tools and the Niagara out last night and am planning on an update post by Thursday. Thanks for looking in.

Thanks,

Patrick

Hey all, this will be a small update for the time being. I am working on more and hopefully may be able to add later.

I had only one of my anchors constructed and decided that it was time to get the second one ready. I hope to be adding them to the Niagara soon. I figured I'd show my method for constructing the anchors. I discarded the white metal upper piece and sprayed the lower piece with a thick black metal primer to get some casting texture. Next I glued to pieces of basswood together with a square hole through the middle. After some shaping I took some black heavy paper cut into strips and added the iron bands. I added the brass hoops and wrapped them in black nylon thread and painted over this with flat black paint to hold things in place and cover any bright spots. They are ready to go now. I will be working on adding these 'sleeve catchers' to the Niagara next.

By the way, has anyone been catching the new pirate series on a certain premium cable channel? It is completely awesome and makes for a good background distraction while model building. I haven't spoken with anyone else who has watched it and was looking for alternate points of view on it. I read somewhere that a new series about Blackbeard will be on a national broadcast station soon. I'm anxious to see that come out too.

John and Larry, thanks for looking in. I am working hard on getting a single anchor in place. I forgot the amount of work that goes into constructing some of these tiny little metal bits. I'm still optimistic for some more pics tonight.

Thanks,

Sjors, I'm a bit far off from full scratch building. I do however like to build my own version of some pieces when the kit's version isn't well done.

Thanks for looking in Ben. Here are some pictures of the starboard anchor in place. I'll be working on the port anchor and will put in place the coiled hawsers once I've got that done.

A small update... Both anchors are now hung and I have the hawsers in place and coiled in their proper spot per photos I've seen of the real thing. Thanks David, aka Bahamas Diver. I'll be working on some running rigging and getting the other two ship's boats completed and ready for hanging. Thanks for looking in.
