HMS Diana 1794 by Ray - FINISHED - Caldercraft - A 38 gun Heavy Frigate

Recommended Posts

Thanks for the comments guys and the like button responses the rework although a pain did come out as good as it possibly could have done, I am one starting on the two upper deck fittings starting with the cannons and caronades, much more fun, I will update the build on the guns in a few days.

The nine pound carriage guns were made up in the same way as were the eighteen pounders. The caronades were made up in stages as shown in the photos, I first looked for the tackle arrangement and used the one that seems most common, the issue was the fixing of the front carriage pin it shows it pinned through the bulwark on the bottom of the gun port, the problem with this would be, in lowering the bottom of the port to keep the cartridge level, it would be to low and look wrong, so I looked at every photo of caronades I could find, on models, and as mounted on H M S Victory, and most had the front swivel pin going through a block mounted on the deck in front of the port, so that is how I built mine.I am just starting to rig them in place.

Hi B E

Thanks for the endorsement you are a font of knowledge I researched the front fixing, it as best I could, the plans shown them fitted through the gun port sill. I am going to arrange the guns on the quarterdeck with the two caronades in the middle and two nine pounders either side, and on the foredeck two nine pounders will be set up as bow chasers and the last two caronades in the last forward side gun position.

Carronades

The first photos show the first carronade fully rigged, next photos show the stages in which they have been rigged, I tied up all the tackles first and then just hooked them on and set them up, glued down the end of the rope and added the rope coils, they look a bit shiny in the photos but not in real life, they just need the paint touching up on the hooks and eyes, next I will add the nine pounders to complete the deck guns on one side of the quarter deck.

Sweet very sweet.

Ray, did the carronades come with barrel plugs supplied or did you make them yourself, I've been toying with the idea for some time and it's good to see them in use.

Hi Mobbsie

The stops in the carronades were part of the moulding I just painted the ends red so as to highlight them. I have added a photo of the original casting of one of the two I will not use.

Carronade as supplied in kit.

Ray, your coils look great, very natural. I was on the fence as to whether to do coils or not, and didn't go down that route myself - but maybe next time.  The training tackles make a big difference as well.

Cheers,

Jason

Quarter Deck 9 Pounders

The nine pound carriage guns were made up the same way as the eighteen pounders were, and added to the quarterdeck, I have added a couple of photos of the blocks with hooks fitted I make these like this to give as much space between the rigging blocks as possible, they just have a .7mm hole drilled in the end and an opened up and cut down copper eyelet inserted.

Hi Ray, very nice mate but aren't those coils a complete pain to do.

I have made loads and am still trying to find a system I like and which will give me a uniform finish, who knows, maybe one day.

Cannon and Carronade's look fantastic.

Hi guys   Flemish Coils

Yes Mobbsie the Flemish coils are a real pain, but they do give best look to rigging the guns in my opinion, I have added a few photos of how I make them, and I wish I could find a more efficient way of doing them. This way works but is slow and tiresome, sometimes it takes several goes to get one started,I lay out the masking tape sticky side up and just stick the rope down wrapping it around the starting loop under my finger and when done paint them over with diluted pva and remove when dry.

Hi all

I have had a bit of a building break, mainly due to refitting our bathroom, which included a new bath and new sink & loo vanity units. We also had a week looking after two of our granddaughters. I did make up a couple of the deck fittings the capstan and the quarter deck sky-light.
Now back to adding the guns to the other side of the quarter deck, two carronades so far.

Capstan

Welcome back,

Just curious. Any particular reason you left the skylight natural as opposed to paining it red and black like the capsan?

Thanks,

Hi Mort

I might yet still paint the sky-light I just made up a couple of the deck fittings until I could get back to the guns, I will most likely place all the deck fittings dry in place and then decide on the final paint or varnish finish.

All the quarter deck guns have now been rigged slow progress due to other comittments and a bout of flu, the only other work has been on some of the deck fittings. I will update on the fitting soon, I will also add the pin-rails, I think they will be fixed to the top of the bulwark below the open rail,I will also fit the cleats plus the eye’s to the rear half of the ship, at this moment I am also thinking the sky light will be painted red ochre and the barricade black as all the wooden components in its construction are different colours.

Time to complete making up the quarter deck fittings and add them the the model, I first added the pin rails all of which had the holes opened up to take the belaying pins, next came the deck cleats (which were drilled and pins added) then I added the eye bolts to the deck and the channels, here I did make a boo boo and drilled the holes the wrong side of the main mast hole, so now there are eye bolts right around the mast hole. Next the cavil blocks were modified to bring the top away from the side of the bulwark this will allow ropes to be tied to them see photos, if not altered you could not tie off on them. I made up the barricade a bit fiddly but not to bad at the moment I am undecided as to whether to leave it unpainted or paint it black.

Thanks Ray for sharing, very nice progress pics, shes really coming together.  Love deck shots.  On the barricade, I have seen a few admiralty models with these painted/stained black and thats probably the route I would choose knowing the wood would probably not look the best left natural with what I'm assuming is ply.

Cheers,

Jason

The barricade has now been painted black and I think looks better for it, the ships wheel has also be painted and made up, and the rail on the great cabin roof has been fixed on.
