Today was Wing Keel day for Stars and Stripes , I started by bringing the last plank down to the Keel Line. Then I faired it in, Next using the Plans, I made the wing , I then built up the Keel to the Trim Tab , and faired it in . Then I attached the wing and built it up . And started to fair it in. A little more fairing on the wing and she is just about ready for paint. Here are the results

Thank you Dave, I am pleased with how she is turning out , she is very Sleek and all business

Thank's Jay, The Keel was easier on this one than on the Boxing Kangaroo. The transom is key to this build and planes down to a point . Awesome design

Thank you Geoff , She's comming together . I will use West system on the hull ( I wont be putting her in water ) but,  I am thinking I will end up with a better finish

Hi David B. , I would love to have a scaled down version about 30 feet ( so I would not need a full crew ) To me Stars & Stripes would be the 12 meter to have

Best Regards,

Pete

Pete I somehow missed the start of this one, but no matter ... i'm here now and glued to the screen!

I was in Fremantle in 1987, only a few years before I migrated to Australia. So no prizes for guessing who I was rooting for. Unfortunately, Australia IV didn't get very far and Kookaburra III was soundly trounced by S&S. Fremantle was transformed by the Americas Cup - before 1987, the town was pretty grungy and more or less a hangout for hippies and druggies. After 1987 she had been given a lick of paint and really took off. Fremantle is beautiful now, and it was all thanks to the Cup.

Regards, Keith

Today, Once the Keel situation was under control on KA-6 ( " The Boxing Kangaroo" )on Stars & Stripes I finished Fairing the wings on the Keel . I then decided to use West System epoxy on the Hull, I did this in 2 stages the first was wetting out ( just straight epoxy brushed on the Hull ) Cure time on the West System G-flex 650 epoxy is 3 hours ( set's up in 45 minutes ) After 3 hours I mixed another batch of epoxy and added  West system 406 Collodial Silica ( High density Filler ) . Then using the mixing stick / Applicator  ( kinda like a small putty knife ) I applied it over the entire Hull . This was kind of a trial run for the R.C. Boat that is coming up. Next I will fair the Hull starting with 220 grit working my way up to 800 grit wet , This should give her a really smooth Hull ( like Glass ) Here are the results

Thanks Piet, I am having alot of fun building these, and with the exception of the Catamaran vs Big mono hull ( wich to me does not count as an Americas Cup ) these are the 3 winners in order ( I did not plan it this way ) all in the same scale, I have used West System for years and am completly sold on it . the 2 stage is how I would do a full size build , except after the wetting out, While still wet  Cloth would cover the hull and then the 406 Silica epoxy mixture over the top of the Cloth. I will be doing that 2 stage with cloth on the BMW ORACLE Boat

Pete

Hi Michael, I had a 16 ft Hobbie Cat for a few years , she was alot of fun to sail ( fast ) What I am refering to is , The way the whole deed of trust was handled, it was more of a court battle than a cup race ( I grew up down there ) I will give the San Diego Yacht Club credit for coming uo with a 45 foot cat to defend the cup , But it kinda gave the sport a Black eye ( in my opinion )

Pete

I agree Pete, it is a shame it had to come down to the courts. I also used to have a Hobie 16 that I raced, so got to know West System pretty well. It is great stuff. I love these Americas Cup models you are doing.

Thank you Tom , Thats why I dont consider it a real America's Cup . The Hobie 16 was a fun boat to sail ( I never raced mine ) . West Sytem is amazing , I normally use the 105 , 205 combo ,  this G-flex  650 is pretty impressive with a longer pot life . The Cup Boats have been alot of fun to build , ( I do recomend building one )

I watched the cup race this year and they were really moving.  The danger and the thrill are still there but the vessels seem to lack the elegant grace that I always appreciated.  Maybe I am just to old and out of date.

Thank you David B. , Those big cat's are Fast , I agree alot of the elegance and Graceful line's are gone , along with the mystique that was with the cup . Like I said in the KA-6 Build log , Corporate sponsorships and constant rules changes Kinda ended an era

Hi Omega, it was a mismatch , If Team New Zealand would have given the San Diego Yacht Club more time to build a 90 ft mono hull of there own ,  I think it would have been better for the sport, I think they thought they could just come in and take the Cup ( They did 2 cups later when Dennis Conner lost it for a second time ) What a mess that Cup Defense was.

Pete

In between Epoxy Stages on America3 , I sanded the hull on Stars & Stripes , I then Sprayed 2 light coats of primer ( very light ), I then sanded her with 600 grit sandpaper , The hull is now ready for Paint. Next I will get the top side finished . Here are the results

Pete,

I am trying hard to find the similar plans like yours but for S3 Sverige  that sailed in 1977.

Still remembering that sunny but windy Saturday when me and a friend were out sailing his Scampi when we just heard the sound from breaking waters of a bow cutting. Then suddenly she appeared, big and beautiful,  and overtook us in a heartbeat.

I also learned to sail solo when being six years old. My dad converted a deserted  wood rowing boat to a sailboat.

During the following winter she got an fiberglass shell on top of the wood. She had beautiful inner-hull of wood. Got plywood centerboard and a mast made out of pine found at my grandfathers summer-place.

She was clinker build. Today 40 years plus moss and moisture claimed her life.

I remember being towed after my dads boat sleeping in the sun. We were One.

Hi Dr. Per, I was fortunate to have already had the plans for the 3 Americas cup boats, (I have had them for 15 years ) They were lines drawings. For the BMW ORACLE US-98 . ( to be built next ) those plans are for an RC boat  ( IACC 120 Class ) The talk of sailing when we were children brings back alot of good memories. The boat in the photo is a Lyle Hess design ( lapstrake hull  ) she was a Montgomery 8

Thanks Dave , My parents are from Holland , So of course I had the Dutch Boy Haircut ( it's pretty funny )

Best Regards,

Pete
