HMY Fubbs 1724 by Mike 41 - (second rebuild) Scale 1:48

Recommended Posts

Hi Richard,

Thanks, the red wood is Bloodwood, the squares next to the red is Marblewood (marmaroxylon racemosum) from Woodcraft, the brown is cherry and the yellow is yellow heart. I use turning squares of exotic wood to make small parts it is a lot less expensive than buying boards.

Hi Brian,

Your parquetry flooring looks great. I tried to stay a little closer to the drawing only changing the pattern a small amount. I noticed you didn’t paint the frieze using a solid color instead. I haven’t decided what to do there yet.

This set of photos shows the floor being assembled and a 1/64” thick sheet of Beachwood being applied for backing. The final picture shows the floor in place on the model.

I love that deck... fit for a king or queen.  Wow.

Hi Brian,

I agree the Fubbs is a worthwhile project that I would recommend. Another interesting ship to build is the Sussex I have the book by Gilbert McArdle and it is on my future build list.

Both of those are on my "one-day" list! I have both the Fubbs Practicum (Romero) and the McArdle Sussex book on my bookshelf just waiting patiently. One day........

Lovely work with the parquet flooring by the way Mike.

Thanks Grant,

I have had both books on my book shelf for a while and decided to build the Fubbs first since she is smaller and a little less complicated. It would be great to see another Fubbs build on the site.

The Great Cabin has a frieze shown on the wall in the practicum and sense I am not much of a painter I decided to use a simple floral relief carving for decoration.

Hi Brian,

The Proxxon milling machine does a great job on boxwood. I tried it on basswood and it just made a big fuzzy mess. LOL I use files, knifes and some small palm handle gouges for finishing details. It looks like I will get a lot of practice carving on the Fubbs.
