VOLVO OCEAN RACE Open 70 By Pete48 - FINISHED - Scale : 1/4" = 1' - 0"

Recommended Posts

Let Me start by saying "These are some pretty amazing racing Machines" . The Volvo Ocean Race is an Around the World Race , The Open 70 class is the largest , I am using plans that I got off the internet ( lines drawing ) for the  Camper Volvo 70 wich was the 2011-2012 New Zealand Boat . I am building her in a 1/4" = 1' - 0" scale so she will be about 17 1/2" long wich is perfect to free Sail . So I will build her to Sail. I will use Basswood for the Backbone ( Keel ) Frames and Planking . I will also be doing the 2 part West System on the hull, so she will be plenty strong.  This morning I got up and had coffe , and after spraying the final coat of white on America3 , I went to kinkos with my flash drive, and had the drawings enlarged to scale, printed them out and went to Michael's for the wood, I am planning on my own color scheme for this one as well as doing some things that I had seen on some of the other boats , So it would be my entry for this years 2014-2015 race. and that's part of the Fun ( That is what it's all about ) Here is where I am at :

Pete

We are linning up again.

Cheers

Geoff

Thank's Geoff, I am glad that you are going to follow along . This build just fell in my lap , I don't know that much about these Boats ,Last time I followed Around the World Races it was called the Whitbread race. So I may learn somthing along the way. It looks like it will be alot of fun to build . And we will get to see her sail.

Best Regards,

Pete

This is going to be an interesting built. I always watch these races when National Geographic has made a movie from it.

I'll be following this one.

The name Whitbread race has been around for a long time. This is also a race where people die while sailing. Especially around the 70's where there wasn't as much modern technology.

It is the ultimate sailing experience.

Wow, that's raw power Pete!  It'll be interesting how your model will do.

Safe me a seat, okay?  You certainly do some amazing things with your models!

Cheers,

Hi Piet, there is always a seat , this one should be alot of fun. I will cut the Keel and frames out tomorrow , She's a very straight forward boat , so it should go without a hitch

Best Regards,

Pete

Pete,

If you want to build the winning boat of the 2011-2012 Volvo race you are going to build the wrong one! The French Groupama 4 was the winner ;) .

The boat you are showing in post #9 is Hugo Boss not a Volvo 70 but a Imoca 60, these are designed for shorthanded ocean races like the Vendee Globe and Barcelona Race.

@Keith, These boats have daggerboarts because they use a canting keel with the ballast attached to it. The keel is only used for maximizing (optimizing) the stability of the boat and has almost no function as creator of lateral lift for upwind purposes. The 2 asymmetric daggerboarts are used for that purpose.

These Volvo 70 are amazing boats and I look forward to follow your build!

Thanks Keith, , Welcome aboard, Hans Answered the dagger board question, (I wont be adding the dagger boards, as I intend to sail this one and the Keel should be enough )

Thank you Hans, I am a student of the series, and I appreciate the help

Thanks Tom , thats part of the fun, seeing the boats in action

Thanks Bob, The graphics are very cool on these boats , I am using the Brunel boat for my sail plan ( sweet looking boat  ) I did not see the maserati boat , that's Awesome , should be a fun project

Best Regards,

Pete

Thank you Marc, Hans explained it like this :( I quote ) These boats have daggerboarts because they use a canting keel with the ballast attached to it. The keel is only used for maximizing (optimizing) the stability of the boat and has almost no function as creator of lateral lift for upwind purposes. The 2 asymmetric daggerboarts are used for that purpose. Makes sense to me

Here is a Dutch guy who built the ABN-AMRO as an RC pond yacht

Update from the above guy.

Pete, where are you getting your plans from?

Pete,

The Brunel is a new one design Volvo 65 used for the 2014-2015 Race. This is the first time The Volvo race uses an One-Design boat.

The Brunel rig is not identical to a Volvo 70 rig!

It is up to you if you want to build a imaginary Volvo boat, or you would like to have some more scale approach, these boats are all very "cool" and a fusion model will be cool also :D .

Some additional information regarding the Daggerboards: The keel is canted to windward from the center of the boat apr. 40-45 degrees. If the boat is canted an other 15 degrees to leeward, the dagger keel is 55-60 degrees of the vertical. the projected area is therefor minimal en so the keel is constructed with the minimal resistance en only used to hold the big led bulb to windward. If you want to see this on youtube look for the Hugo Boss keel walk. This is a Imoca 60 and canted extreme for the promotion video, but the video makes it very clear.

Thank's Hans, I have been learning alot about these boats and the new rules. Yes I am building a imaginary version based on the camper plans, as a fun project with my own Color sceme . to imagine that I would be entering it into this years race . I know my boat does not meet the new rules changes. They are incredible boats. ( I just discovered them a few weeks ago ) My knowlege of Racing Yacht's is Primarily with the America's Cup Boat's . I am having fun learning about this extreme Sailing

Thank's Cap'n'Bob, Pretty wild,I just discovered these Boats Should be fun

Thank you Kees,I hope you enjoy it

Best Regards,

Pete

Well, Today I had a great first day with the Boat. I started by laying out the Back bone and setting up the builing jig ( square is square & level is level ) I next cut out the Back bone and layed out the frames, The first thing I changed was the transom , now the deck goes all the way to the transom. I then cut out all the Frames, and started to detail the Cockpit section of the Boat. Next will be to make the Deck sections and detail the Back bone for the Keel ( wich will remain stationary ) I dry fit all the frames to the Back bone, and she is right on the money. ( this was a much needed great first day on the build ) This is quite a different boat, This is the first time I have built anything like this, It's been amazingly fun . Here are the results
