I am going to use the same Blue on the Hull that I used on Stars & Stripes, with a White Deck , Yellow accents and Flat Black on the Spars , Rudder Blades and Keel , She should look pretty good Color wise . Next I made the deck and installed it. I then faired the frames for about 3 hours and started Planking ( my favorite part of the build ) Iinstalled the first 2 rows of planking, She's going together like Butter. I glued everything together with Titebond 3.( it's Waterproof ) Next will be to finish planking the Hull , and get her ready for West System Epoxy. She's an Amazingly fun boat to build . I'm sitting here, thinking about making a boat like this RC, and wondering what a functioning canting keel would do on the model. Unfortunately, I don't know how the canting keel and planing hull scale down on the model, but it would be pretty cool to get the RC model on plane! Both the VOR and Vendee Globe are way beyond my meager sailing abilities, but they're fascinating, regardless. If you're interested, a good book on the Vendee Globe is Godforsaken Sea by Derek Lundy, describing the 1996 Vendee Globe race. I enjoyed it a lot. Have fun! We will! I'm curious what the hard chine does. Additional stability (along with daggerboard) when heeled? I'm also curious what the optimum heel angle is for speed when sailing close hauled. This quest for stability gives you more hull area (and resistance when upright). They have however so much sail area that this is only a real handicap in light and upwind situations. The rest of the time they use their brute power to plane to the horizon! To understand the chine, you think of a boat much wider as is practical or allowed by the rules. You get a flatter more powerful shape. then you chop off the parts of the hull that are not allowed. You end up with a shape that acts as if it was a wider boat. As these boats are optimized for ocean racing they do not sail upwind with fine angles often, they sail a bit lower under the assumption the the wind will change anyhow in the next day(s). I hope you don't mind if I throw out a few questions and assumptions to get on the correct track. I'm used to thinking of chines as a (kind of) stability point at a certain angle of heel. In the case of an El Toro dinghy (which I used to sail) and a Star (which I haven't sailed much), the heeling angle when the boat is on its chine is a more stable point than most heeling angles. Is that correct? I also remember that increased heeling angles (on displacement racing hulls) provides a longer waterline, which increases hull speed (which is why I thought racing sailboats of the 20's and 30's had such long overhangs). But waterline length on a planing hull doesn't help (IIRC), because you want to minimize wetted area. I looked up some of the measurements of the Open 70's. I see the beam is 5.7m. If I understand correctly, is the basic hull design much wider than this, but surfaces are created to cut the beam to 5.7m, thus creating the chine? Please note that I'm not an NA or Marine Engineer, but I've been fascinated with sailing hull design for a long time. I don't think that a chine is a sudden increase in RM (righting moment) but you want the boat to have the chine on the surface. The water will flow of the chine with enough speed. Increasing heeling angles does work wonders with long overhangs as you wrote, but these modern boats are vertical ended so not much change there. Waterline length on a planning boat does not help, but as you are also not plaining, a longer boat will usually be better. Simplified you explained the design process, but i think that the tooling is now evolved and more specialized, as are the architects. I am not a architect either, but I sailed a lot on modern racers and now sail a proto Mini Transat 650 solo. These Transat boats could be seen as mini V70's with canting keel, asym. daggerboarts, waterballast, twin rudders etc,but then sailed solo! Later (in 2011) they where the first married couple to sail the Mini Transat Race (each solo in their own boat!), a very special achievement. I hope to make a model of my own mini 595 but I have some full scale projects for that boat in progress! Pete, the mini is a lot of fun if you can handle it. Upwind they are fast for a 6.5m yacht, but reaching and running is where the fun starts. They have up to 135 m2 sail area running for a 700-800 kg boat! I like your Volvo model, good progress! pete48 Posted August 16, 2014 Author Share #60 Posted August 16, 2014 Today, another great day , We had a thunder storm and lost power early this morning , so I spent the day getting the Hull faired. The boat is actually a little more complicated than originally talked about .I then decided that I would do somthing different with the cabin , I made a mock up out of paper once I was happy with it, I made one out of Basswood. I then started making the Bowsprit , ( I taped it together and to the boat for the pic's) The cabin is not attached and is positioned for the pic's.
