HMS Victory by foxy - Heller - 1/100 - PLASTIC - with Dafi's etch & resin set

Recommended Posts

Well after the festive season its back to work on the Victory.

Made up the closed Heart blocks from Syren models.
DSCF5103_zps75d33b48.jpg
Then started on the fiddle blocks, for those that have not used these, they come out quite well in the end, with care.

I start by gluing with pva white glue, leave for 24 Hrs under pressure.
DSCF5104_zps44cef362.jpg
Next remove and shape them with sanding sticks.
DSCF5111_zpsace13bdb.jpg
Last I drill out for ropes later.
DSCF5112_zps66e3ef4e.jpg
Once done they are very robust and work too.

More soon shipmates.
Plus Happy New year to you all.

Then found a use of the Scale Warship resin heart blocks.
DSCF5120_zps84cb9d2f.jpg
These are ideal once strung and painted for the bow sprit.
DSCF5119_zps292894f3.jpg

Once fixed and a paint these are ready for the next stage.
DSCF5122_zps3ca53fa9.jpg
Just right for 1/100 scale.

On the subject of Heart blocks, made a big boob with Syren closed heart blocks, so have ordered some more , get it right next time around(tells one's self to read the instructions)

Great work on the crown, Foxy. Plus, I love your work on the blocks (single, double, fiddle, and closed hearts). If you do not mind me asking, what size rigging rope are you using... I had to buy some micro drill bits (.2 - .5mm) in order to thread some of the blocks..

Hi AvesP.

On your question of rigging ropes.

I intend using Chucks very fine ropes for this build. from Syrens smallest .20mm and some very old cotton thread which still has made in England on it.

This I am using for the rap around blocks and tackle for the guns on top and quarter decks, plus Syrens for the working blocks.

As for the shrouds, I am not sure yet on the colour or size, there being black or hemp colour used, the black colour I assume is tarred hemp.

For the ratlines I will be using the smallest thread/rope.

Still working on the hull at the mo, so any help in 1/100 for the size of shroud ropes would be most helpful.

“You have a great Master Daniel to follow ..."

Dear Lawrence, you know what? He already is beyond :-)

It is lovely to see how his build is taking off even in places I haven´t touched yet. Stunning work he shows. It is a pleasure and honor to see some of my teeny bits integrated and brought to another level!

Cheers, Daniel

Thank you very much Daniel, that's  the best compliment coming from you sir.

As I have said many times, with out your etch work this ship would never have got off the ramp, so its thanks to the effort you have put into the extra detailing this ship deserves.

Started on the lettering around the crest, one side done, but its slow work, only lost one letter I so far, good job there's extra's.

Will show pictures soon.

A little more progress this time on Dafi's resin Anchors and Knights head.

First the Anchors, there are three types(sizes),not much trouble here assembling, some sanding and filing.

DSCF5187_zps77cc65a4.jpg
Later when all ok, will spray black and make brass rings fettered, plus 1mm plastic strip for binding.

Next it was the Knights head, this is the basic shape after sanding and making sure it fitted the bowsprit.
DSCF5191_zpsf7935aea.jpg

A clearer picture of the additions of Dafi's brass etchings and some brass rod.
DSCF5192_zps917be6cc.jpg

Just some brass rod supports for fixing and to spray black.

Again a very good fit and will be better than the bits from Heller.

Well its a busy time and found some brass/stainless rings for hanging the anchors.

DSCF5206_zps247fab16.jpg
With black rope raped around ring and later will add cotton thread for seizing, also plastic strips that come with Dafis resin anchors glued around wood plinths.

Next it was the crest to finish, not to happy with this as the lions are not very good,(old Mold I expect).
Made up the ships bell with Dafis etch and extra brass rod to allow the bell to swing later.
I assume that the handle on the top has a pull rope attached, anyone Know if this is correct???.
DSCF5213_zpsd8dfe610.jpg

Last pictures are the catheads added crown to front that comes with the kit.
DSCF5211_zps2c6fee85.jpg

More later

Moving on with the closed heart blocks, made a boob of the first set of Syren one's so ordered some more, will need eight of these for the stays and preventor stays.

DSCF5218_zpsc2afe9c1.jpg

Got it right this time round???.

Next it was the carronades that go on the forecastle, two in all.
So a little detailing is ness.
DSCF5224_zpsa9b8b612.jpg
Added Dafi's etch and some scratch items.
DSCF5219_zpsebf7727e.jpg
Show before painting.

Thank you Daniel

Well moved on to the flag lockers.

Decided to open up and have flags rolled up.
DSCF5225_zps09fa1355.jpg
First I removed the front half and built up shelves with plastic card.
Was only going to do the one, but as you see both have now been done.
DSCF5228_zpscdbc37cf.jpg

DSCF5229_zpsc1077d95.jpg

Used Daniels etch for the canvas cover, this will go on top.
DSCF5237_zps762c8372.jpg

Next it was the railings for the tops.
Removed the plastic bar supports and replaced with Dafis etch ones.
DSCF5235_zps19931f69.jpg

They look much better I think.

Made the flags from kitchen roll rapped around brass 1.2mm rod, then soaked in PVA, when near dry, removed the brass rod and left to dry.

Later dipped the ends in varies colours and cut to size, pushed into the compartments with a little PVA.

Just some touching up to do.

Cheers Keith, happy modelling mate.

Moved on a touch with work on the hull, this time Hatch's and roping.

002_zps454ff1a1.jpg
Made up Plastic rod and white thread for this part of the build.
Numbered hatch's and used Dafis eye bolts and etch parts.
DSCF4663_zpsb0bda3c1.jpg

Drilled out with etch template that comes with Dafis etched parts.

DSCF5259_zpsf19571f5.jpg
Done one side but need more for the other, so that's the next job.

Another update, this time on the change of Heller items with Dafi's etched parts.

First the skylight over the captains quarters, strait forward, but after spraying let bits attach them selves, will sort later.
DSCF5281_zpsooep2vqx.jpg
Pictures tell it all.

Next its the Binnacle, this to show the parts ness to complete. Used Dafi's very nice etch parts and some scratch additions.
Again first hand painted over primer sprayed.
DSCF5279_zpssxgw1tub.jpg
Looks better once a sprayed coat is applied.

Also made up the railings as the Heller one's are to bulky I thought.
Used the Heller pillars and brass for the supports to the netting.
DSCF5277_zpsy91oy7kz.jpg

That's it for the mo.

A little more progress with both the skylight and binnacle.

Bothe are Dafis etched parts.

First the skylight, no problems with this, glazed and added plastic strip to the inside.

Used dafis very good hints and folded the top with a wood dowl.
DSCF5289_zpsgn4xpqan.jpg
Also added plastic strip to the poop deck, later will plank out this deck.

The Binnacle was a hard item to fold, but used a hold an fold which made it a lot easier.

DSCF5287_zpsrqpjm8z2.jpg
Added glazing and etched parts plus a plastic rod to the centre.

DSCF5282_zpsnbtro2ge.jpg
As seen along side the Heller part for this ship.

Another update.
Made up the wheel and now making crew to work it.
DSCF5290_zpsnwrg46ut.jpg

Next it was fit the upper deck, this all went well and weighed down to dry.

At the same time going forward and then backward, 'if you see what I mean'.!!!!
I test fitted the quarter deck, this needed 2mm each side about a third the way up being removed.
DSCF5295_zps4nn9nq9i.jpg
'Yep weights still inplace'.
All went well after the surgery.
DSCF5294_zpsafo2o6nv.jpg
Also tested the forward castle.
DSCF5297_zpstkjt6sby.jpg
fits fine and will go higher as ness.

Then it was the poop decks turn, this fitted well but need to sand off one side to lower.
DSCF5296_zps5tn8encg.jpg

Tested the fittings.
DSCF5299_zpsjfuctnry.jpg

All seems fine now its time to go backward again :)

A little more progress, this time on the deadeyes and chains.

I do have wood deadeyes, but the Heller ones go better with Dafis etched chains.
Using his hints and idea's I came up with another that works for me.
DSCF5304_zpsc0ni3jvy.jpg

By using a pointer with a little CA around and press onto the etch chain.
DSCF5302_zpsh9vhqo4k.jpg
Managed to turn out all the mizzen/main and fore deadeyes in a couple of hours.
A little Klear to seal and give a little shine later when all dry.

DSCF5305_zpshccgyprl.jpg
Kept the rest of the etch chains on the fret till I need them for mounting on the hull.

One very good point in Daniels hints is that you have to use the chains on the fret in sequence, and there are arrows ,names to follow for this. so making the dead eyes up is no problem.
