altalena18 Posted September 26, 2014 Author Share #61 Posted September 26, 2014 So I need some advice- the daggerboard has both a sort of ring with tongues to tie the rigging that lifts it up, and a ratchet to hold it in place. Does anyone have any idea how I can craft that ratchet? Any common parts or something, or any other method? I guess I could try to carve it out of brass stock with my Dremel but I'm nervous that it'd be difficult and messy and not look neat. hexnut Posted September 26, 2014 Share #65 Posted September 26, 2014 It might be easier to fabricate it by soldering small square stock to sheet, using the edge of a steel square for rib spacing, make it wider than you need and cut it to width. Also, if you want much easier fabrication and a material that will still look good once painted, you can glue together small styrene strips, just like the brass above. I'd go with brass. Don't get me wrong- I build plenty of plastic and cardstock models and think they are fantastic, Maybe I'm being puritanical or snobbish but a wooden boat needs to be a wooden boat! I couldn't find any brass strips at the jewellery store, but they had some thick wire. I had someone there put it through a vise to get it a bit flattened. Once I got home, I tried carving the notches. I kept not really succeeding until I built this jig- which I'm quite proud of! I have to say that your metalwork was in my mind when i was trying my hand at some for the first time, Michael! That little marine engine is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen.
