Rainbow J Class Racing Yacht by Omega1234 - (18 cms long overall) - Finished

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, especially Kevin, Lawrence, Piet, Michael and everyone who hit the Like button.

I've added a bit more detail to the main saloon, including the main settee, some cabinetry including a full height cabinet and the saloon's formal dining table. Still more work to go, though.

The latest photos are as follows.

Hope you like them!

All the best

Patrick

Hi Igor

Yep. Good suggestion. I thought of that and there is actually a painting on the port (left) side of the main saloon. It can't really be seen from the angles of these photos, but it may be visible in one of the most recent posts.

I'll try to take a better photo for you on the weekend.

All the best and thanks!

Patrick

Hi Igor

I've found these photos, taken earlier, of the painting on the wall. If I can, I'll follow up on your suggestion to see what else I can put up on the bulkheads. The more, the better, as they'll add life and character to the interior.

I hope you like them!

Cheers

Patrick

Your eyes are sharp and your hands are steady.  I would love to see that beauty up close.  A fantastic piece of workmanship.

Hi Patrick,

It is excellent!

OK, I will try to think up something still.

For example, let's imagine that it is the yacht in 1935 and in its saloon there is a Cup of America won in 1934 :):)

I incidentally found couple of photo of the last replica Rainbow:

Hi Igor

Thanks. I've been using those same photos to build the interior of my version of Rainbow. Unfortunately, the real interior looks heaps better than anything I could ever do (sigh). Anyway...something to strive for.

Loved the Americas Cup photo, too!

Hope you're going well and am looking forward to a good weekend.

Cheers

Patrick

Hi Lawrence and Mick

Many thanks for your compliments! Greatly appreciated as always.

Lawrence - pls be rest assured....I'm learning heaps from your schooner as well; especially in terms of craftsmanship, skill and dedication to doing the very best possible. Pls keep it up, because I'm enjoying it immensly.

Mike - pls don't learn a new language just for me. I'm grateful for your praise and recognition, regardless of whether it's in English or not!

Many tanks!

Cheers

Patrick

Hi Patrick and Mike,

I think you will be surprised when you know as easy it was made.

I used for this purpose a bamboo toothpick, minidrill Proxon, a scalpel and an emery paper with very fine grain.

All process takes some minutes.

You process a toothpick butt, then with using the edge of the knife of the scalpel you cut out the toothpick midpoint, then by the same knife you do the external form, then slightly you polish with an emery paper and say: - "Voila!"

And you can receive more beautiful appearance if you use qualitative bronze or gold paint.

Bets Regards!

Igor.

I have to admit that if I did it to scale, it'd probably be less than .2 of a mm. Out of interest, how big we're those beauties you made?

Unfortunately, I have no tool for such precisely measurement of the sizes.

Initial diameter of a toothpick of about 2 mm, i.e. diameter of a finished product turned out about 1,7-1,8 mm.

Height is about 2,5-3,5 mm. But you can easily regulate height itself. The bamboo appeared excellent material for this purpose.

Besides, it is always possible to make handles for the Cup of a thin wire and to paste them with superglue before painting. It is possible to use a bilateral adhesive tape to fix the Cup during painting.

Best Regards!

Igor.

Hi everyone.  Thanks for your Likes, especially Igor (for the cups), Tuffarts, Lawrence, Mick (Yamsterman), and Mike Gerber for their comments!

A bit of a milestone happened tonight. I've managed to build the main cabin's superstructure. I've cut a temporary roof to fit over the cabin in order to give a better impression of what the final product will look like.

Overall, the cabin may look deceptively simple, but in actual fact it was the most complex part of the whole ship. Why? The reason is that because the ship's interior has been built, the cabin floor and companionway staircase must fit just exactly right. Getting the height of the cabin floor wrong would mean that the internal doorways from the midship cabins through to the aft owner's stateroom would be too low for a person to fit through. So, quite a bit of brain power and planning had to go into it to get it just right. The cabin also has its own settees and table in it as well, so getting that right was a challenge as well.

Oh well, there may still be heaps of work to go, but at least it's been fun so far.

Hope you enjoy the photos.

All the best

Patrick
