WASA by jollymillar - Billing Boats Model 490

Recommended Posts

Well here we go, with my first log. The Wasa. It looks quite challenging but extremely interesting to build. The history of the ship is fascinating, and one day I will visit the WASA Museum in Stockholm. The attached file is just the beginning, with :) the layout, and the review of the drawings. I will keep you posted on the progress with as many pictures as I can spare the time for.

Looking forward to talking to you all and those in particular building the same boat.  JM

Looking forward to your build of this most wonderful vessel.  I am also interested in how you approach and build a Billing Boats Kit.  I have a kit from 1984 of the Santa Maria w/o fittings kit, but that is no big deal, I can make and use after market items for what I do not have.

Will watch w/interest.

I am very interested in following your build of the Wasa.My wife and I saw the real thing in Sweden and it was so impressive that I would like a model of this vessel.

I am currently building the Sovereign of the Seas and HMB Endeavor.

E

When these are finished the Wasa is my next challenge.

Good Luck on your build Jollymillar.

JM,

You were wise with your choice of kits,

Some of us building the Corel version have had to deal with many more inaccuracies with that kit. Billings did a much better job creating this kit. There are, and have been several Vasa's here at MSW. Lot's of info available, the best of which, of course are the several hundred photos of the ship in Stockholm. SUper useful if you plan to be as accurate as possible. It is a beautiful example of the 1600's.

Good luck

MIchael

Well I have just finished gluing the frames to the keel. Although I took a fair amount of time to make sure of my measurements and gluing etc. the first decking piece did not fit too well. Nothing a filing and adjusting  did not cure.  I glue my frames and when they are set I use a glue gun to secure them. I saw or read this somewhere  and it works really well. Just make sure they are in the right place. Its a devil to take them off. It feels good to get started, and the only real distraction has been stopping to plough out the driveway of snow !!!

I am already finding the drawing crucial and they are very accurate and detailed. Well done Billings.

I posted this on what I thought was a help forum but have got no feed back as yet, so I thought I would post it here as well. I have

noticed a number of Wasa models  have been  stained or coloured in some way as you have finished the decking and /or the hull. Can anyone help with this with the type of stain and why it was done. Many think it is better to leave it in plain wood. Any comments would be appreciated or help in what type of stain is used and applied.    Cheers,  JM

http://www.billingboats.com

Found this site, which is from 2012, strange! but after navigating around it a bit, I found some downloads (four pages) which where missing from my instructions.

Although I am working on the 490 Wasa, there where plenty of other Billing Boat downloads. So if it helps anyone take a look. Also found some colour pics...!!

The Billing instructions are amazing.... NOT   JM

It is a little awkward to find and try as I may I could not insert the link.... anyway here it is, just follow the instructions.

Modeling has slowed down due to the summer outdoor chores, but I am managing to move along slowly. Hit some snags as I broke the bulwark projections on the front end stay,  and had to do a repair. Also some of the "pins on the bulwark broke off. Not sure how this happened though. It can be repaired when I get more time. Onward and forward with a great seal to do. Will take some parts outside and complete them on the deck as the weather is fantastic.

ps.

Since the Billings model only provides one layer of planking. Is it best that filler blocks are used on the front and back of the hull.

This will save you a lot of frustration on planking the hull.

Thanks for that, I am sitting here looking at it and organising my thoughts. I will certainly do this. Thank goodness for sanding blocks! JM
