how to build the base of the mast and the yard

Hello everyone

As I said in the previous post I'm building my first model (the bounty of mamoli)

I want to know how to polish the edges of the YARD
I saw a couple of ways to do this but there is no explain how to mark the WOOD
 
It also need to do a kind of square edge in the mast joint area
I would be happy if you share your experience with me in how to mark and how to polish/cut the wood
