Best copper coloured paint for hulls

Recommended Posts

Jay, one of the best looking copper paints is from Alclad II. Its a lacquer and should be air-brushed (no brush painting with it) over a primer coat. The surface should be sealed and smooth. Their site is alclad2.com. Two shops in New Castle NSW stock it, according to the Alclad website

Thanks. I had a look at alclad but wasn't sure about all the prep involved. At the moment the hull is painted with Tamiya Copper paint, but I'm not very happy with it, I also doubt that it's sufficient for alclad to go over (?). Also I think I'd prefer brushing over airbrushing because I've come quite far with the model before this decision, and don't want to ruin what I've done.

You could think about guiding it in copper sheet, the stuff available on ebay is real copper (silver and gold are imitation)

this is extremely thin copper that is applied with a leafing size. lefing size is painted on , then left for half an hour to go tacky. the copper is applied to the size

After all is dried it can be burnished to a high polish.

I have done small parts with it, and results were good.

I think a whole hull that is smoothed would be easier.

You could varnish it for protection also, as it will corrode over time.

You didn't mention if your Victory model is plastic or a timber model.  I reckon you cant beat real copper hull plating.

This was my HMS Sirius under construction a few years ago with copper hull plating.

It's a plastic model. Added it to the main post for clarification.

I did get some copper tape to try do something similar  but at a 1:180 scale I found it too finicky. I have a 1:96 constitution which I'll probably try it out on when I get started on it

Thanks

Anyone able to give advice for the best paint for painting the copper sheathing on my Airfix HMS Victory? It's already got a coat of Tamiya paint but I'm not too happy with the colour.

Thanks

Have you seen Dafi's Victory. He's used self adhesive real copper foil. Designed for the stain glass business all sorts of widths on eBay. And about the same price as paint but with the real beauty of the glow of real copper. Which will either age beautifully or you can varnish it after wiping down with alcohol. Not sure of the exact page but looks great. Edited by Izzy Madd
