I agree 100%; they are beautiful books. I acquired them as part of maritime library from the estate of an acquaintance. There are about 200 books in boxes covering the floor of my tiny office. As I've catalogued them I've learned (mostly from MSW) that many are rare or desirable. This makes it hard for me to part with them. But when I agreed to take the collection I made a promise to myself only to keep what was truly going to be useful to me. Given the number of projects I have planned or underway across all my hobbies I will never get to build a 74 of the type described in Boudriot's wonderful books. So I will probably sell it along with at least 80% of the rest of the collection. Once I've finished sorting them I will give my model ship club first dibs and then I will bring them here. Regards, Brian

Thanks Jason, That's exactly the type of answer I'm looking for. I have some very specific projects in mind for the future and will only keep those books that fit the program. If I'm not carful I'll wind-up with 300 books I don't really need! They are beautiful but perhaps Boudriot's books should go in the sell pile. Thanks, Brian

The French 74 L'Entreprenant (launched 1751 at Brest) was destroyed during Siege of Louisbourg (1758). Would "The Seventy Four Gun Ship" by Boudriot be useful for modelling her? I ask because I am dispersing a large collection of maritime history and ship modelling books from the estate of an acquaintance. The first three volumes of Boudriot's series are part of the collection. I am not very knowledgeable about this period and can't really tell weather Boudriot's books cover all French 74s or just a subset from a particular period. Building the L'Entreprenant would be a project for the distant future but there is little sense in my selling the books if they might be useful to me at some point. Thanks Brian

Thanks Wayne, The books by MacGregor and Chapelle are both there. Haven't found the one by Moore but there is still lots to sift through; maybe I'll get lucky yet! The ships I have in mind to model are all bog-standard, Nova Scotia built, load haulers; mostly shuttling between N.S. and the Caribbean. Brian

Good Day All, I'm doing basic research for a model of a three masted ocean carrier ca1900. What are considered the best technical reference books for this type of ship? I'm currently helping to disperse the maritime book collection of a recently deceased gentleman and there are a number of books on masting and rigging etc. available to me. Thanks, Brian

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
