  1. NILE STEAMBOAT "ABBAS" c1884, 1:32

This is a scratch built Nile paddle-wheeler "Abbas" that modelled after the boat in the epic film Khartoum. The Abbas was originally a Thomas Cook & Son ship that organized excursions along the Nile for rich Europeans. It was taken over by the British as part of General Gordon's attempt to rescue the European and Egyptian residents of Khartoum during the War Along The Nile. There is little information on the original ship, so I had to rely on fuzzy screen shots from the film and period photos of similar boats of the era. My model, made mainly from leftover parts and pieces of other projects is a smaller, shorter version of the film version. It is 23" in length, 14" high and 5.5 inches wide.

  2. Ulisses, by Occre

This is my second attempt at building a boat, and the first that I fibreglassed and built for RC. I stumbled along the learning curve especially around the hull construction and waterproofing. In spite of all the sanding, filling and painting, the boat still shows off the various bumps and ridges. So I say to myself, "Hey, this is a working tugboat and after long and hard service it's bound to show its wear and tear with pride". Despite this, I am happy with the result. I did a lot of customizing. I added a number of features to the wheelhouse, installed davits (the kit doesn't have any). The kit also had no way of entry below deck so I added a companionway. I also renamed it the Martha May, after my bride of 32 years.

  3. Fantasy Flying Machine, Scratch built 1:30

This is a scratch-built fantasy flying machine made from left over bits and pieces from other projects, including broom handle, dollhouse trim, rubber bands, etc.. I It is part ship, part stagecoach, car, hot and hot air balloon. It does have a rudder, paddle-wheel, steam engine, anchor and bowsprit sail, so in my mind, at least, it can hopefully qualify as a "ship". Maybe more of an airship, but still a ship!

  5. C.R. Lamb, 1:48 Sternwheeler by Interaction Hobbies

Built in 1907, this sternwheeler transported lumber, supplies and people in the British Columbia interior for 30 years.  The model is approximately 26" in length, 5.5" in width and 9" high.

  6. African Queen, Billing Boats 1:12

I recently completed the African Queen, a 1:12 scale rendition of the boat made famous in the Bogart and Hepburn film. I tried to make this look weathered, rusty and dilapidated as it does in the film. I also added my own decals as well as smaller details not included in the kit. These included an anchor, winch, a variety of tools, tea kettle, shovel, bibles, cases of explosives and a boiler plate. I was not happy with the flag that came with the kit, so I made my own tattered version. I managed to find a doll that, although not totally accurate, does a fair stand-in for "Rosie". I'm still looking for "Charlie". This is a static model.

  7. RCMP St. Roch (Billings Boat)

This is my first kit in almost 40 years. It wasn't easy - my hand shakes a bit more than it did when I was 30 years old, but I am satisfied overall in my new venture. The instructions were quite poor and I spent a lot of time holding up parts to the 1:1 scale drawings to try and figure out what was what and where it belonged.
