Happy New Year! Little bit of rest from daily realities and I tackled on limber boards and strakes. Before that I had to prepare new stock of my cherry wood, and this time I planed to 8mm: I drilled limber boards 2mm holes as I have seen others did. I have not seen any on the drawings. I assumed you are all right 🙂, and treeinailed with 1mm nails. Unfortunatelly I see now some mistakes I have made before with frames, they are not all the same. Next time I will try to do better. So my idea of having large part not planked has to be revised. Otherwise looks fine. I try to work as much as possible with chisel and planer to get nice planks cuts: I am gradually mounting thick floor stuff planks up to lower deck level. Then I will prepare deck beams. I took the risk of painting planks on one edge side. Not sure if planks were caulked on the inside. Perhaps someone can help me on that. In the meanwhile I am testing different wood pieces for outside planing. Ebone wood has been ordered for wales, but still have not decided on outside planking - cherry or walnut or? I would like to have it relatively dark. Having visited HMS Victory in Portsmouth some years ago, I remeber besides painted part, oak was quite dark. I like my cherry, but whole framing is made of same cherry and I would like to bring some contrast. On the other hand wallnut may be too dark and porous... I treated both wil oil to get the real colours: What do you think? Cheers -

Back home from Poland afer Christmas, still have few days off befor hitting everyday routine so I thought I would try to catch up with Trition. Bascially I finished the frames, gunports. And I keep finding mistakes I had made... Still have to sand nicely everything, sometimes correct here and there, otherwise it looks good. I have ordered ebony for wales, and some extra wallnut, expecing to come in next few days or so. In the meanwhile I am playing with thick planks and treenails. Have I not said before, the wood I use for now is cherry from my garden. Wales with anchor stock strakes apply to standard treenails pattern or not? -

Slowly I carry on. Finished all the frames, I had to re-make extra 2 of them. Treenailed them all as Chuck suggested and started to put everything together with quickly assembled jig to hold whole construction in place. I pre-cut, prepared selected frames for gunports. It was easier now. Next will come keelson and will move on with boards and strakes from bottom up. I am still figuring out which wood I will use. Should planks be shifted inside with same pattern as on the outside? What dou you think? Also I wanted ask about wales. Modfeld describes wales as anchor stock strakes. I have not seen anybody doing it though, Any ideas? EDIT: I found log by ChadB actually planking wals with anchor stocks, so that is clear for me now. Cheers Jerzy -

It has been 2 years! Well, with back then 6 years old son, now already 8... things are tight on time and free time to say the least. I have not given up! I am almost done with frames. I have experimented with different wood but I am not happy so I need to remake 2 again, but should be finished with frames within a week or so. Perhaps before Christmas trip to Poland. I think I will use treenails on the outside in the end. I had to re-produce my cherry timber. Looks like I will have enough at least for Triton. I also started to brainstorm around the jig to hold all frames firmliy together. -

thanks Chuck. But could someone answer my question regarding chock parts within frames? -
Well after good 10 years I am cutting some wood again, and this time not for house building purposes. Whan I moved in here around 5 years ago, there we had an old pear tree in the middle of tge garden, and it had to go .... except that I kept it for muy future retirement ship modelling purposes. I am not retired yet, but fingers are itching... I thought of HMS Triton already back then when I was with contact with Chuck and Russ and others, and plans have been waiting. Let's see what happens now. 1st test frame I cut out of pine scrap wood just for testing purposes. Immediately said, this wood will not be nice. too soft and too grainy. So time to prepare my patiently waiting pear tree. I cut into 7 mm planks and then with thicknesser went down to 5mm... Sorry I am metric oriented. Aseembled 2 frames and started to think.... about leaving one side open with visible frames as I saw by few other threads. I am not subject matter expert but I was wonderring about futtocks assembly. Many placed treenails ond sides of frames. But what about chock piesces? Then treenails actually would be placed from inside of the frame. Cheers Jerzy

WOW, thanks James. As I wrote in the email I had reason to stop for a while. Messing around with HMS Triton project which I loved 10 years ago but never realized it. Might open new topic. For the time being I am reading your great forum threads and last night I cut out one frame. I need to get better wood though. I just used scrap wood I had.

Years have passed. Life goes on but old love lives on. Many things happened... trying to do some "woodworking" again...
