  1. Here’s some intriguing news from the middle of the Pacific about a type of vessel that is rarely mentioned in the world of model shipbuilding: the famous Polynesian voyaging canoes that sailed across the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean hundreds of years before Magellan. In the coming days, I will upload some pictures of my work, but for now, let’s discuss a shed I discovered while cruising around the island today.

To my surprise, I found a "halau," which is the Hawaiian word for canoe shed. I paused and noticed that someone was using an electric tool, indicating that the halau was occupied. Indeed, someone was busy repairing an old koa outrigger. This halau was established by Pu'ake'a with the aim of preserving and often restoring old Hawaiian outriggers. Currently, the halau houses about four smaller outriggers that need restoration, as well as four larger ones, some of which are 45 feet long and unfortunately beyond saving.

What intrigues me most are these larger canoes. They are around 100 years old. Considering it takes about 100 years for a koa tree to grow to a height of 45 feet, we are looking at a span of 200 years since the seed of that tree took root. Fascinating!
