beautifull model Phineas !!
Nils
Thanks Nils I'm glad you like it I've since added a fish davit and anchor buoys. Some things never seem to get finished. It has cured
me however of highly decorated models and I will be going for more
workhorse type models next such as the bomb vessel Granado and
once more I will be relying heavily on the aots book and logs on
this excellent site

Fantastic model! What materials did you use?
Thomas
Hi Thomas,
Thanks for comment.
Hull was planked using 1.5mm marine ply on 32 birch ply bulkheads. Interior lined with fine fibreglass matting sealed with resin.Plating done with 1mm aluminium sheet ( old lithograph plates).Superstructure all made from timber bases plated with the aluminium on which was put all the detailing.I used alloy extensively as it is easily worked and needs little finishing. Guns ,torpedo tubes, cranes all alloy section or plate. Soldered brass for mine rails ,cable reels ,and a host of other small details. The hardest and most tedious work was in constantly rescaling plans dimensions from 1/100 to 1/125.
Hope this gives you some idea of the materials used.

Unfortunately I built this years before I discovered this great site so there's no log but
basically I followed the aots book on the ship.
The major changes were as follows:-
1. The flat kit transom was replaced with a curved
one.
2. The kits fanciful waist gangway was replaced by
scratchbuilt spare spars
3. A scratchbuilt yawl replaced the kits boat.
4. With the exception of the kits deadeyes all
masts,spars and tackles were scratchbuilt
5. Much of the kits timber was replaced by
better quality stock.(Modellingtimbers were
a great source but now no longer produce this)
At the risk of boring you to tears I could go on
but at the end of the day I'm sure you will do a
fine job if you decide to revisit the Caroline,
(I've seen your own logs)
