Hey Brother Nils! That is where the towed array deploys. It is a set of passive hydrophones on a long cable. It gets the passive sonar away from the noise of own ship. It is also used to solve bearing problems

No sir those are not really windows. Those are protective RFP and rubber plates that cover the Active and Passive sonar transducers. Sound does not go through steel very well so material that can allow acoustic energy through is used. The front of American submarines is nothing more than a big fiberglass dome. When the shipyard here in Charleston shut down they had a few sonar domes left over so they turned them so it formed a dome, they cut a door in the side and presto you have a storage shed.
