Two steps back, two steps forward. Nearly same place. In the previous months I reviewed the construction contract for HMS Nassau of the Ardent class, sister ship of HMS Indefatigable. Due to some discrepancies between what I had built and the contract, particularly the dimensions of the black strake, I had to remove and replanked all the staff between the gun ports and the black strake. This time, I carved the port stops directly into the wood around the gun ports, as was historically made, instead of adding wooden planks inside the gun ports as I had previously done. I then added the spirketing and upper ledge staff. I painted the insides of the gun ports and the inside sides of the gun deck using Atom acrylic paints, and I must say I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and performance of these paints. In the near future, I will focus on building the interiors and installing the gun deck planks. Merry Christmas everyone! Alessandro

Hello everyone, My name is Alessandro and I am writing from the port city of Livorno, Italy. I have been building ship model kits for almost 40 years, mainly plastic and resin in 1/350 scale (some recently completed models are published in the gallery), but the HMS Indefatigable is my first serious work with a wooden ship model. Although aware of the intrinsic complexity of the model in question, the passion for two-decker ship of the lines and frigates pushed me to attempt the construction of a subject that in my opinion combines characteristics of both categories of vessels. I started building this model in February 2024, to date I have finished laying the external planking and will soon move on to building the interiors. I have made some changes to the original model as illustrated in the images that will follow. I hope my work will be of interest to you. Greetings! Alessandro

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
