  1. Willie L. Bennett-Chesapeake Bay Skipjack-MS

    Following are photos of my first wood ship build. I had gotten the idea that I wanted to give it a try with absolutely no idea of what I was getting into. I went to the closest hobby shop and browsed their selection of wood ship model kits. In hindsight, the shop had quite a good selection to choose from based on my later experience with hobby shops and wood models. I chose the Willie Bennett based on the shape, the scale and the price. I knew enough that I wanted as large a scale as possible

    Needless to say, the kit was not what I was expecting, it wanted me to cut all the wood pieces! I really got into the project and spent a lot of time learning and calculating how to produce the necessary parts, then remaking a lot of parts. I really enjoyed the calculating of plans for parts and the metalwork, even though I had to learn to solder on the fly. I even made a steering gear for the wheel to operate the rudder. In hindsight, I spent a lot of time doing all of the interior work then closed everything up to never see the effort again. With what I know now, I would have left some of the hull open permit viewing of the interior.

  2. Lewis & Clark Keelboat

    Following are photos of the Lewis & Clark Keelboat made by L&C Replicas and sold by the Lewis & Clark State Park in Onawa, IA. I did this kit for my parents after they had followed the Lewis & Clark trail via auto. I added the hatches, door, windows, scribed the plank lines and added to the rigging rather than using a pencil to draw the hatches, door, windows and hull planking as directed in the instructions. It was a fun kit to build and was a good second kit to apply what I had learned on my first kit without the time investment.

  3. HMS Sultana-MS

    Following are photos of my build of the above. As with each kit, it was a learning experience that will be of benefit on future builds. I will also say that the solid hull kit was not the time saver as which they are marketed. On the flip side, I did learn to be very careful with the rotary tools as they can take off a lot of wood very quickly. I used Chuck Passaro's practicum which was of tremendous help and I would strongly recommend using a practicum for a first build. The practicum provided suggestions and resaons for doing things a certain way that may not be obvious to a novice builder.

  4. Glad Tidings, Pinky Schooner, MS

    Following are photos of the above that I recently completed. This was a fun kit to build and the scale, 1:24, provided the opportunity to add details not possible with a smaller scale kit.
