If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.

I too am working on a model of Sir Frederich Wilhelm. Started around 2000 and I am still on the hull and decks. The model is from a kit made in Italy By Carta Augusto, Laboratorio di Modellismo Navale, Cagliari.
The documentation included in the kit consisted of four line drawings, with very little annotation, no dimensions other than the drawings were “drawn to scale”. The drawings might more appropriately be called sketches when it comes to accuracy, detail on the rigging, ornamentation, or actual construction. I have been building to photos other models of this ship found on line and the book: "Risse von Schiffe" contained drawings with more detail of the frigate, but again no dimensions. The 1:100 drawings included in the book are a reconstruction from a painting by the "well known dutch painter Lieve Verschuier and other contemporary drawings and paintings.” This book was borrowed from a library in Norway? by my city library at my request. I am reluctant to start a build log because I feel I have taken so many liberties with the design. Lack of better documentation and looking at the variety of designs exhibited by other models of this same ship lead me to believe that I am not the only one to encounter the problem. Very interested in seeing your solution to constructing things like hatch gratings, bow rails, stern counter, and especially the Quarter Gallery.
