The props (screws) are manganese bronze made by the lost wax casting process. Many of the castings were reproduced using britania pewter.

USS Coates (DE-685) Fitting the jewelry, rudders are carved from styrene stock, aluminum runner posts, screws were made by LCDR John Woodward USN who at that time was OIC of the Propeller Shop Long Beach Naval Shipyard. They are manganese bronze, I turned brass stock on a lathe to make the dunce cones.

Thanks Rick, I've not been able to find anyone that has built a display model in this scale so I'm on my own.

USS Coates was the first ship I served on, '65-'67, again '69-70. As a machinest mate assigned to both the firerooms and engine rooms. Now that the model is complete I look back at the years on and off building her. Working from shipyard prints, photos my memories are now complete. I'd like to share with fellow modelers a not to common build. The USS Coates is a Rudderow class destroyer escort that served from 1944 until decommissioning in 1970. Starting with a fiberglass hull from the Scale Shipyard and a display baseboard which became the foundation for this build.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
