  1. Life’s been a little bit busy, so I haven’t posted. But I have been working a little bit at a time. I’ve got the stanchions and stringers installed. I’ve just about finished the deck houses. I decided to plank the roofs across the beams instead of fore to aft.  I like the look.

  2. I got the deck stringers stained and installed. I appreciate the work and skill that I’ve seen in making jigs and drilling the mast holes. I have a lot of drill bits and I started a very small pilot hole and worked my way up, one size at the time. It looks good to me. Now to work on tapering the masts.
  3. Whining ended yesterday.  Today it’s back to work.  I don’t have any varnish to train th plywood walnut, so I decided to go ahead and plank th inside of my homemade bulwark.

Hi Pastor Wes, this update is not attached to your build log. I think you have used the Status function instead of using the Reply to this topic box in your build log. Good luck with your build!

  4. Today is only a whining moment. The instructions said the deck stringers were walnut, as were the stanchions. I have been trying to bend the walnut strips with almost no luck. Then I was looking for more wood when I saw the #19 on the same plywood as the false deck. Why not use a standard description, when describing parts? It didn’t help that all the build logs I have looked at evidently had already stained the stringers. Oh, well. Live and learn.
  5. I’m moving on to the deck stringers and bulwark stanchions. I don’t have the tools to make a fancy bending frame, so I used square push pins
  6. The bulwarks glued up well. I discovered after the glue up that my cleanup of the previous mess was a little uneven. Sanding evened most of that out. I was left with a small gap right at the deck level, but I hope I can correct that in planking.
  7. I said I had no idea what I was doing. I was at the home supply store that rhymes with Goes. I found a piece of 1/2” birch plywood that was delaminating. The store practically gave me the piece. I brought it home and cut two bulwark pieces. It’s not finished, but it looks doable.
  8. I said I had no idea what I was doing. I soaked the bulwarks, wrapped them around a tuna can and when I started the glue up, the plywood delaminated. I’m torn between cutting it all off and leaving it and covering it as best I can. It is my first model and a learning experience. The port side I would live with, starboard warped in a weird bulge.
  9. This micro miter box was a life saver. It cut my time by at least a day. I discovered something while planking. Sharpies are great, but either they need to dry for a good while OR wood glue dissolves the ink. When I started laying the planking, I made an inky mess. I tried to sand it off and you can see the results. I kind of like it though. It looks weathered.
  10. It is an understatement to say that I have never done this before. I found the model at a flea market for $20. it sat in my basement workshop for 6 months before I even opened the box. Having never worked on a wooden model, I’m sure I’ve made every mistake possible. It wasn’t until I hit my first snag that I started looking online for help. I still think the instructions were written for a master builder. Too many important facts left out. I didn’t know to bevel the hull planks, so I improvised with Gorilla wood filler.
  11. Mike, I can definitely do that.
  12. Thank you palmerit. I understood that reference.
  13. I’m a noobie, so I don’t really understand your reply, but I think you restated my question. I know it I supposed to fit, but it doesn’t.
  14. I am getting ahead of myself, but I don’t know what to do about this gap. Do I trim the piece or build up the hull?
  15. I’m a pastor in rural north Georgia and I acquired a swift 1805 pilot boat model. Had a lot of fun over the years with plastic models but this is my first time ever working with a wooden model. I’m trying to just follow the instructions. My personal opinion is that the instructions in this kit leave a lot to be desired, but I’m working on it.
