So I managed to find enough patience to finish the bow plating . Still not entirely happy with it but lessons have been learnt . Then I moved onto the rudder . The lesson I learnt here was that cyanoacrylate reacts with varnish . So it's a good job the hull is getting painted . So I cleaned it up best I could and put some colour on her . Over the last few evenings I have made a start on some of the deck fittings .

So I did my bit in supporting my local model shop today . I only went in for some thick Ca and I spent far too much. I can't be the only one who goes full on impulsive mode when they walk into a model shop . At least I hope I'm not . Got so giddy I nearly forgot the glue . Treated myself to a plank bender . A little guillotine. Had a play with this ..it's gonna to make planking decks so much more enjoyable. Also a little table vise thing . Anyway I think you will all agree that these are an investment. At least I hope that's what you will say if my wife asks ! Erm . What can I say . I couldn't resist . That's my next project decided . If I can find the room . She's a bit bigger than terror . Hidden it from the missus for now . Anyway back to terror . Gave her a couple coats of satin varnish and made a start on the bow plating . This is where I started to get a little bit upset with the lack of instruction or the lack of a 1:1 profile plan of the ship . Why do we only get a 1:1 deck arrangement plan and not a side view . I've tried my best . Got very frustrated and decided to make up some of the deck structures while my patience reserves fill back up .

Thanks guys . As it's my first wood build I'm gonna stay faithful to the plans. I may go for a more accurate approach when I have more experience. Ive been working on the ice bumpers / rubbing strakes for the last couple of days . I'm going to have nightmares about them ... Not struggling as such. But it's taking some time shaping them by hand .

Well I started this about a week ago . I was full of trepidation after opening the box as this is my first wooden kit but it was soon replaced with anticipation. The keel went together without much trouble . Then it was on the planking the deck . I enjoyed doing this although I think I may have to invest in a guillotine. Then I started playing about with methods to age the deck. I liked how this turned out so I decided to use this method on the deck I've since been told this is inaccurate of a naval ship of this period as the decks would of been scrubbed within an inch of their lives . So I am pleading artistic license your honour . I didn't really run in to any trouble until I started with the first layer of planking . I did one side and it was far from perfect but I learnt a few things and the second side went much smoother So after many hours sanding and shaping the bow formers today I have decided to give her a quick skim of filler to rectify my atrocious planking efforts . So I'm currently sat with a large glass of red wine . Waiting for the filler to dry . It's been frustrating and fun so far . I'll have another go tomorrow and see if I can get the hull smooth enough to start the 2nd layer of planking / veneer .

Good evening . New member here. A big hello from me . I'm not new to modelling . I have built quite a few RC model boats from the likes of model slipway , mount fleet ,robbe etc . As well as many plastic kits of the years . But .... I have just started my first plank on frame ship . Which is the HMS terror by occre . It seems to be a popular choice on this forum .

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
