    Chains were used by the US Navy (in war time), in place of the traditional hemp slings to support the main and fore lower yards.  The chains could obviously absorb more abuse in a close action.  Not sure if Oneida had them in 1813, but I think it is a nice detail one would have seen else where in the US Navy if not on the Lakes.
